The final of The Great British Bake Off next week looks set to be the biggest TV event of 2015 and the most watched episode in the show’s history.
Wednesday night’s semi-final was seen by 10.2million viewers – 1.4million more than 2014’s offering – placing it among the year’s most popular programmes.
In comparison 8.4million sat down to watch last weekend’s England v Wales Rugby World Cup match.
Despite the record numbers, many fans on social media were outraged by the judges’ decision to send home 19-year-old university student Flora Shedden
Despite the record numbers, many fans on social media were outraged by the judges’ decision to send home 19-year-old university student Flora Shedden.
Viewers felt her chocolate biscuit showstopper in the shape of a carousel outshone the tempered chocolate water well created by photographer Ian Cumming, 42.
One tweeted: ‘Bake Off was a joke. Ian pours some chocolate into a mold and gets worshipped like Jesus whereas Flora makes a carousel and they crucify her.’

Another wrote: ‘Flora performed stronger across the three challenges than Ian.’
In the end, Miss Shedden was sent home for showing a lack of finesse. The other finalists were mother-of-three Nadiya Hussain, 30, and anaesthetist Tamal Ray, 28.
Last year’s Bake Off final was watched by 12.3million – more the equivalent episodes of Strictly Come Dancing and Britain’s Got Talent.
