Mira Sorvino, 48, sparkles in bright blue dress as she reveals 'mean girls' who made high school hell inspired her to do cult comedy Romy and Michele

Mira Sorvino, 48, stepped out looking great on a busy day in New York.

The Oscar-winner flashed a smile as she exited the HuffPost Live studios in New York after promoting her new film Chloe & Theo and then heading to the UN on Wednesday.

The actress also revealed that 'mean girls' who made her high school days miserable are what inspired her to do cult comedy Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.

Mira wore a bright blue dress with a sparkly neckline, and added a chic black jacket as she exited the studio.  She threw a white handbag with dark blue strap over her shoulder, and added a white canvas bag and cute lace ballet flats.

The actress wed Christopher Backus in 2004, and they have four children: Mattea, Johnny, Holden and Lucia.

While Mira won an Academy Award in 1995 for her role as a cheerful prostitute in Woody Allen's film Mighty Aphrodite, she may be best known for her role as Romy White in the cult 1997 comedy.

'We were cracking each other up. We were trying hard not to laugh during scenes because were were such abject idiots, but there was a lot of love between us,' she said about Kudrow.

The film follows the LA ditzes as they concoct a plot to convince their former classmates they've become successful at their high school reunion, with Mira's character claiming she invented Post-Its.

The Oscar-winner explained that she took the ditzy part to give hope to kids suffering through 'miserable' high school.

'I was a nerd in high school. That's why I did this movie,' the Harvard graduate told HuffPost Live.

'I was such a geek. They called me Mira Queera and the only boys who liked me were the dungeons and dragons guys. People would write mean things on my locker and on my books,' she remembered.

While she had a few best friends, the mean girls made high school such a living hell that the actress has never been to her own high school reunions, she said.

'For some reason they just hated me and I hated them,' she said of the bullies. 'Maybe because I spoke back to them and they would get mad, but I was miserable in high school. Miserable.'

'That's why I did Romy and Michelle because I wanted to show people who are suffering through that horrible moment of high school unpopularity and geekdom, that it's gonna get better and you have the strength within you to not give a crap about what anybody thinks.'

In her latest film Chleo & Theo, Mira plays a human rights lawyer who helps an Arctic Inuit man after he travels to New York to warn people about climate change. The film is available in select theaters and on demand.

The actress later headed to UN headquarters, where she is a Goodwill Ambassador against human trafficking. There, she spoke about violence against women and the need for more women in the criminal justice system.
