Liverpool 1-1 Sion and Celtic 2-2 Fenerbahce UEFA Europa League MATCH RESULTS: Brendan Rodgers' side fail to beat struggling Swiss side as the Bhoys throw away two-goal lead

The last Swiss side to draw 1-1 at Anfield knocked Liverpool out of Europe and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping this is not a case of history repeating.

This was not as dramatic a night as that one last December, when Basle secured a point in the final Champions League group game, and a stalemate with FC Sion does not mean Liverpool’s interest in the Europa League is over.

But for all the possession they enjoyed, their problems persist. They will struggle to reach the knockout stages of this competition with any degree of comfort if they fail to convert chances and remain brittle at the back.

21:56
Celtic 2-2 Fenerbahce

Celtic are pegged back by Fenerbahce at Celtic Park after racing into a two-goal lead.

21:55
Liverpool 1-1 Sion

Boos echo around Anfield following the final whistle of the Europa League clash.

21:54
Sion fans do the Poznan
21:52
Will this Anfield crowd turn on Rodgers?

It will be interesting to see how the home support react to tonight's result if the scoreline remains the same. Yes, Liverpool have bigger matches to come but they should be able to beat a struggling Swiss side with relative ease.

21:51
Konate comes off, Bia comes on
21:50
87mins - Coutinho makes bursting run

Coutinho, who has been the best player on the pitch since coming off the bench, runs down the left but is unable to open up enough space to find a way past both Sion's defence and goalkeeper.

21:48
The lively Assifuah is replaced by Ndoye
21:43
It remains 2-2 in Scotland

Fenerbahce have brought on another defender and changed formation in what looks like an attempt to shut up shop. They will be happy with a point, especially as they were two goals down at one stage.

21:41
Van Persie cuts a frustrated figure
21:40
77mins - Can fails to direct header at goal

Coutinho shows why he is one of the best playmakers in the country by whipping the ball into a dangerous area. Can leaps above Sion's back-line but his header goes off target.

21:38
Toure is replaced by Sakho

Another defensive substitution by Rodgers. Sakho replaces Toure - taking the captain's armband in the process.

21:37
Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein

Much better from Liverpool since Coutinho came on and Ings departed. More urgency, more goal threat, only the finishing is lacking with Lallana and Origi guilty.

21:36
73mins - Vanins the hero again

Lallana almost makes it 2-1. He brings the ball down brilliantly with a beautiful touch but Vanins wins the duel by closing down the angle to save with his feet. Remains 1-1.

21:34
71mins - Coutinho tests keeper

Coutinho's bending free-kick can only sting the hands of Sion goalkeeper Vanins.

21:32
Origi shoots at goal again

Fine play by both Coutinho and Origi. The Brazilian plays a through pass to his team-mate, who just runs out of space to beat Sion keeper Vanins.

Origi covers his face
21:30
Assifuah almost makes it 2-1

Sion's goalscorer turns his man before unleashing a low shot at goal. Mignolet is able to beat the ball away. Remains 1-1 with just over 20 minutes left to play.

21:27
63mins - Origi should score

Origi, who has at least tried to make things happen, goes close. He turns his opponent inside the area in order to ascertain the time and space to shoot at goal. However the keeper dives low to save from Origi. A top-class striker would score that.

21:24
Hopefully Coutinho can brighten up this game

This game has been dim, so let's hope Brazilian playmaker Coutinho can add some light to this Anfield affair. Rodgers probably wanted to save Liverpool's best player for their upcoming derby match but he really didn't have much choice.

21:22
Ings is replaced by Coutinho
21:22
59mins - Origi stretches his legs

Origi shows a burst of pace to get away from his man but his shot is deflected over the goal and away for a corner. A change is in the offing for Liverpool at Anfield.

21:19
A reminder of Liverpool's bench
21:18
55mins - Liverpool still yet to trouble Sion

You would have expected to see Liverpool move into second gear - at least - during this half but they are still labouring in first.

Rodgers will surely have to look to his options on the bench.

21:16
Fernandao has made a real difference
.
21:12
Fernandao strikes again

Why wasn't he starting? Substitute Fernandao nets an all-important equaliser for Fenerbahce by beating Ambrose to the ball to head past Gordon. Celtic have thrown away their lead.

21:10
Tactical change by Rodgers

Ibe has switched over to the right to occupy the wing back slot with Moreno taking up a similar position on the opposite side.

21:07
Liverpool get the second half underway
21:06
Moreno replaces Clyne

Not quite the attacking change you would hope for by Liverpool. Moreno replaces fellow full back Clyne ahead of the second half.

21:05
What did you make of the first half Liverpool fans?

Rodgers obviously has one eye on the Merseyside derby this weekend but you would still expect more from Liverpool's weakened side. What do you think Liverpool fans? Are you happy with your side's first-half display?

21:00
The half-time results
20:53
Celtic 2-1 Fenerbahce

Celtic were flying high until a poor mistake by Ambrose let the Turkish outfit back into the game.

20:51
Liverpool 1-1 Sion

Liverpool go into the break all-square. Lallana opened the scoring after just four minutes but his early strike was cancelled out by Assifuah.

20:49
Fernandao scores for Fenerbahce

Celtic concede a disappointing goal shortly before the break. Substitute Fernandao manages to take advantage of a poor header by Ambrose before neatly finishing past Gordon. Game on.

20:47
Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein

Anfield has experienced many famous and great European nights. This isn't one of them. Sion, fifth in the 10-team Swiss First Division, are knocked the ball about comfortably and forcing Liverpool to play long. Not a good idea without Christian Benteke in the line-up.

20:47
Five minutes left to play in both games

Celtic boss Deila will be delighted with his side's first-half display, but I'm afraid Rodgers will not be able to say the same thing.

Sion have looked fairly comfortable following their shock goal at Anfield.

20:45
38mins - Can has tame header saved

Rossiter plays a searching free-kick into the box. Can is able to get onto the pass but his header goes straight into the hands of Sion goalkeeper Vanins.

20:43
36mins - Back to Anfield

Liverpool are yet to really threaten following Sion's equaliser. Lallana played in a delightful curling cross to Ings earlier on in the half but his team-mate was unable to reach his pass to test the Sion keeper.

20:39
Here's the first goal
20:37
Commons scores for Celtic

Make that 2-0 to Celtic. The ball falls to Commons, who makes no mistake of beating the goalkeeper by smashing it into the roof of the net.

20:33
Griffiths scores for Celtic

Celtic make use of a set-piece to open the scoring against Fenerbahce. The ball eventually falls to striker Griffiths, who pokes home from the back post.

20:33
Pressure could pile on Rodgers

Liverpool - despite all their changes - should really be able to beat a side which are currently languishing in fifth spot in the Swiss league.

Sion have reacted well to Liverpool's opener.

20:30
Van Persie not yet seeing much of the ball

Back to the game in Scotland and the match has been pretty even during the opening 25 minutes. Former Manchester United striker Van Persie is yet to rest Gordon.

20:28
21mins - Lallana is pulling the strings

Lallana has looked particularly bright for Liverpool thus far. He's scored their goal but also looks a threat in attack.

20:26
Ings has goal chalked off

Ings taps the ball into an empty net but his strike is rightly ruled out for offside. It surely wont be too long until Liverpool are back in front.

20:22
Goal for Sion

Surprise, surprise. Liverpool concede a sloppy goal. Clyne gives the ball away and is punished. Mignolet is beaten at his near post as Ebenezer Assifuah scores from a tight angle.

20:22
Rapid start by Liverpool
20:21
15mins - Liverpool almost make it 2-0

Allen plays a major role in a delightful move by Liverpool. He plays a neat one-two before laying it onto Ings, whose shot deflects out for a corner. Nothing comes of the set-piece.

20:19
Sportsmail's Joe Bernstein

Divock Origi had to wait 429 days as a Liverpool player for his first Anfield start - and only four minutes to make an impact! Great run to set up Lallana.

20:19
12mins - Liverpool on Easy Street

Liverpool have had the majority of possession so far. Rodgers' side will have far too much for Sion despite making several changes to the side which defeated Aston Villa 3-2.

20:17
Lallana celebrates with Ings
20:16
Fenerbahce on the attack in Scotland

Celtic are on the back foot at the moment. Former Manchester United winger Nani has just squandered the chance to really test Celtic's back-line with a shocking low corner. Remains 0-0 in Scotland.

20:09
Lallana scores for Liverpool

Well that didn't take long did it? Origi races down the right - using his strength to keep hold of the ball - before laying it on to Lallana, who has the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net.

20:09
Ings will be buoyed by England call-up

Expect to see an extra spring in Ings' step following his first senior England call-up. He is being deployed in attack with Ibe and Origi.

20:05
Sion get us underway
