'There is resistance and resentment': Homeland star Claire Danes talks about playing a character with postnatal depression after becoming a mother herself

She’s famed for playing CIA officer Carrie Mathison in hit drama Homeland.

But in a new interview with Marie Claire Magazine, the 36-year-old confessed playing the character’s postnatal depression was challenging, given the fact she’s a mother to a young child herself.

‘It wasn't great, especially when I had a child the same age,’ she said in the November issue. ‘And I am far from having murderous feelings about a child, but I know the complexity of what it is to be a mum, even when everything's going well.

‘There is a resistance and there is resentment even if you're not in postpartum agony.’

The American star - who is married to fellow actor Hugh Dancy, with whom she shares three-year-old son Cyrus - described postpartum depression as ‘one of the last remaining taboos.’

Although Claire explained having a strong family network around her as well as being in a great relationship helped shape up her successful career.

‘I can be much more omnivorous and daring in my career if I feel safe,’ she explained. ‘I'm lucky that Hugh and I both want that kind of experience. We are very interested in what it is to be married and we love each other.’

Dressed in a in a plunging semi-sheer blouse and tailored trousers, the Hollywood beauty certainly sizzled on the front cover of the glossy publication.

She also talked about her apprehensions over co-star Damian Lewis’ departure from Showtime series Homeland.

‘[It was] Kind of scary,’ the star admitted. ‘I knew that taking it on was possible, but I really, really missed and continue to miss [Lewis].

‘He's very charming and a bit of a cut-up. I don't have the same rah-rah spirit on set, which I'm always embarrassed about.’

Claire will soon be seen on the fifth series of hit show, which kicks off two years since the events of season four, with Carrie working at a private security firm in Berlin.
