  • Audience member was yelling: 'I love you' before being dragged off
  • Ms Knightley performing on first night as Thérèse Raquin, in New York
  • Married mother-of-one stayed in character during aggressive proposal
  • Proposer got no answer so shouted: 'Five seconds is too long to wait'

Keira Knightley's Broadway debut was disrupted by a fan who threw flowers on to the stage and proposed to her yelling: 'I love you'.

The British star, 30, who married musician James Righton in 2013, stayed in character despite the interruption minutes into her opening night of Thérèse Raquin, in New York.

Witnesses said the unnamed man stood up and yelled out a proposal to Ms Knightley shortly after the mother-of-one arrived on stage.

The actress carried on regardless even though he then tossed flowers at her and when she did not give him an answer he yelled: 'Five seconds is too long to wait for a response.'

Steal Keira's style in cropped trousers by Gucci

With autumn well and truly here (how is it October already?) we're thinking about giving our wardrobes a much needed update.

We're packing away our summery tops and skirts and embracing a cozier, more structured look. As well as boots, a bag and a winter coat we're in the market for a pair of smart trousers that can take us from the boardroom to the bar.

And it looks like Keira Knightley has found the perfect pair. These cropped pants by Gucci are in a heavyweight herringbone and feature a cute turned up hem and tailored pleats. They'd be ideal for the office with a crisp white shirt or dress them up for night with heels and a silk camisole.

Click (right) to buy a pair now at Net-a-Porter to bag them before we do. If the price is putting you off, however, then take a look at the more affordable options in our edit below. We love See by Chloé's version but bargains can be found at Topshop and LuLu's.

Security then dragged him away from the theatre before police arrived and Keira's co-star Gabriel Ebert got an impromptu round of applause as he kicked the flowers off the stage.

Audience member Kacey Bange told E! Online: 'As soon as the play started, there was a guy who started yelling: "This was all looney tunes!"

'I turned and noticed that there was a guy hanging off the mezzanine yelling stuff to the stage (like) 'Keira, none of this is real! This is all an act! Christ was born of a virgin!''

'He kept yelling before ending with a perfunctory, 'Will you marry me?''

'At this point a security guard walks over and taps him on the soldier, and (the man) starts yelling 'Five seconds! You have five seconds! All it takes is five seconds!'.'

Ms Bange added: 'I would say Keira did a very good job of keeping her composure. The guy kept yelling things and she kept going on with the play without missing a beat'.

Ms Knightley's run on Brodway starts fully later this month.

Jennifer Tepper, who also saw the drama, tweeted: 'I saw this person taken by the police from Studio 54 in handcuffs tonight'.

A fellow show-goe-er wrote on Facebook: 'Show was stopped because an audience member, who I thought was part of the cast, stood up by the front mezzanine railing and asked Keira Knightley to marry him.

'He was escorted out, but not before he threw a huge bouquet of flowers from five rows up in the mezzanine on to the stage.'

Keira was spotted exiting the stage door of Studio 54 in New York City following her rousing Broadway debut on Thursday evening.

Keira, 30, beamed with pride as she was met by a small of crowd of fans outside the theatre following the first performance.

The London-born actress did not mention the rude interrupution just minutes into the performance.

She was as impeccably dressed as always in a pair of grey tweed cropped trousers, a plain black top, a leather biker jacket and a pair of red leather shoes.

The show is a stage adaptation of the French novel of the same by Émile Zola.

It tells the story of a young woman who enters into a passionate affair with one of her husband's friends after being forced to marry her egocentric cousin by her overbearing aunt.

Thérèse Raquin officially opens on Thursday 29 October on Broadway at Studio 54.
