Face reading expert on how the size and shape of your LIPS reveal key personality quirks - as she says Kylie Jenner's plump pout could mean she's 'needy and selfish'

  • Face reading expert Jane Haner told Cosmopolitan that the size and shape of your lips can reveal what you are like in relationships
  • If you have a natural full pout like Angelina Jolie, you are likely to be more empathetic
  • A small mouth and full lips, like FKA twigs, means you can be quite self-absorbed

Whether they are big, small, round, or pointed - or even if you have had them artificially-enhanced - there is one body part that may be betraying your personality without you even knowing it: your lips.

Face reading expert Jane Haner told Cosmopolitan.com that all of our features are linked to various aspects of our personality, but pouts in particular can reveal insight into the way we behave with family, friends, and significant others.

'The most important thing your lips speak to is [what you're like] in relationships and how giving you are,' she explained.

In her book The Wisdom of Your Face, Jane also explores what other facial features - including the forehead, nose, ears, and even wrinkles and moles - can tell you about someone's temperament.

Her theory is based on the ancient Chinese art of face reading, which she was first taught about by her mother-in-law before going on to study it more independently.

For mouths in particular, she focuses on the shape of the lips, taking into account size, plumpness, and the definition of the cupid's bow - that little dip above the middle of your top lip.

AVERAGE MOUTH

According to Jane, people who have lips without any particularly exaggerated features - as in they are medium-sized and neither have an undefined nor an especially defined cupid's bow - are 'even-keeled' in their relationships. They are not needy, but they enjoy closeness, and aren't prone to creating or participating in drama.

FULL LIPS

Those blessed with a full, natural pout, like Angelina Jolie, are empathetic individuals who value their relationships, are drawn to parenting, and find joy in putting others' needs before their own.

If those full lips sit on a bigger mouth, like Kerry Washington's, that person can likely add 'helpful' and 'generous' to her list of traits as well.

The only exception to the rule? The minority whose lips lips are full but their mouths are small and round, like FKA twigs.

Those people are more likely to make sure their own needs are met before their significant other's, at least in the beginning of a relationship. But once they feel like they're getting the attention they need, they're usually able to flip the script and shower a little TLC on their partners.

THIN LIPS

On the opposite side of the spectrum, thin-lipped people - like Kirsten Dunst and Kate Middleton - can be content as loners and are not as comfortable in relationships.

That doesn't mean their romances are doomed to fail - it's just a sign that they may need to be in a relationship where each partner has his or her own distinct hobbies and interests.

Some thin-lipped people, though, may have a tough time when dating gets serious. For those who have thin lips and a small mouth, like Amy Schumer, deep connections are not always a top priority. Again, lasting love is possible - but it could take some extra effort and patience to get there.

PLUMPER IN THE MIDDLE

Not all lips are outright thin or outright thick - some people find that their puckers are plumper in the middle, like Chrissy Teigen's.

Those men and women tend to gravitate toward the spotlight and love attention. But while the shape signals that a person might be the life of the party, it can also indicate a penchant for finding drama.

Jane claims that the plumpness in the center can indicate a self-indulgent streak, while the thinness at the end is linked to being more temperamental and excitable.

ARTIFICIALLY ENHANCED

According to Jane, it's not just what we're born with that can give others cues about your personality - it's our actions, too, since the belief in Chinese face reading is that changing your face equals changing your destiny.

Choosing to inject your pout, like teen reality star Kylie Jenner, or Real Housewives Lisa Rinna and Taylor Armstrong, can show that you're needy, selfish, and a little less emotionally stable - and the more often you go back to the doctor for more, the more likely you are to welcome drama into your life, which can cause a lot of unhappiness in your romantic affairs.

And how you choose to enhance makes a difference, too. Focusing more on your lower lip points to an Epicurean side, indicating that you're all about seeking pleasure in life - and want a significant other who'll bring you fun and joy above all else.

Plumping your upper lip more can mean you're a people-pleaser, who is worried just as much about making your partner happy.as pleasing yourself.

DEFINED CUPID'S BOW

According to Jane, a pronounced cupid's bow can be a double-edged sword. People whose cupid's bows are more peaked, like Taylor Swift or Rihanna, can be quick-minded, creative, and excellent at communication.

But they can also be reactive individuals whose fast thinking is not always as fast as their tongues - which can get them into trouble and lead them to say something they'll regret to their loved ones.

Cupid's bows that are defined but rounded, like Amanda Seyfried's, signal a very compassionate person who goes the extra mile to be considerate of others.

NO DEFINED CUPID'S BOW

People with no defined cupid's bow, like Jessica Biel or Julia Roberts, may lack in emotional boundaries, Jane said.

These people can be generous to the point of fault - although they are often responsible people.

OTHER FACTORS

The face reading techniques also place importance on what you do with your mouth - both long term and on a daily basis. Jane added that holding tension in your lips could be a sign of strain in your relationships.
