Resplendent in a bold red dress, Queen Maxima was in high spirits as she joined her husband for a meeting at a university in The Netherlands on Thursday.

The 44-year-old showcased her trim figure in a chic red dress with bow detail belt as she and King Willem-Alexander attended the China event at the University in Leiden.

The meeting was organised by the university in preparation for the state visit to China by the royal couple at the end of October.

The Dutch royals are heading to China later this month as part of a large business delegation.

According to Dutch News, foreign affairs minister Bert Koenders said: ‘I see this visit as the fruit of our relationship with China.'

He will accompany the monarchs on their trip, which came about when China’s president, Xi Jinping, paid a visit to the Netherlands last year and invited them.

According the Chinese embassy's website, the couple's visit will begin in Beijing and they are then expected to travel to Shandong province and Shanghai.

A broad-based economic mission will apparently run parallel to the state visit.

Earlier this month, Maxima was at the Lachai-Roi church in Alphen aan de Rijn in The Netherlands.

The Dutch royal joined celebrations marking the jubilee of the Moluccan community settling in the region.

Flying solo for the commemorative event, the mother-of-three looked glamorous as she was greeted by well-wishers, official figures and members of the church.

Days earlier, the royal style icon joined her husband, Dutch King Willem-Alexander, at the Binnenhof in The Hague, for Prinsjesdag - the traditional opening of the Dutch parliamentary year.

Prince's Day is the opening day of the Dutch parliament and takes place every year on the third Tuesday of September.
