Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder is developing a Watchmen TV show for HBO.

The director, who helmed the 2009 The Watchmen film, is in early talks with the cable network to create a TV series based on the legendary DC Comics graphic novel, reports Variety.

The director has made a name for himself filming comic book adaptations for the big screen.

He helmed the Henry Cavill superman reboot Man of Steel, as well as the original 300 movie.

The in-demand Snyder also directed the upcoming Ben Affleck film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and is producing the upcoming Wonder Woman film with Israeli actress Gal Gadot.

It is not known if the HBO project would involve the original 1986 Watchmen graphic novel by Alan Moore, or if it would involve the prequel Before Watchmen, which was published in 2012.

The 2009 movie, which follows vigilantes in an alternate United States, starred Malin Ackerman, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino.

A Watchmen TV series would give the edgy cable network a comic book-based series like many of its competitors.

Current comic book TV series on the air include AMC's long-running smash hit The Walking Dead and new-spin off Fear The Walking Dead, which launched this year.

AMC is also planning a series based on the comic Preacher next year.

Meanwhile, ABC has Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D and Agent Carter, The CW has The Arrow and Flash, and Netflix has Daredevil, while Fox has Batman prequel series Gotham and will launch a show based on Lucifer next year.
