Justin Bieber smokes suspicious looking cigarette on stage after swigging from a bottle of cognac during sloppy impromptu New Zealand performance

He vowed to leave his wild days behind him after being arrested while under the influence of alcohol last year.

But Justin Bieber appeared to loosen his resolve on Thursday as he swigged cognac on stage during a sloppy impromptu performance in Auckland, New Zealand.

The 21-year-old was barely able to maintain balance as he jumped around, smoking a suspicious looking cigarette as he stumbled through the show.

Justin, who had joined friends Rae Sremmund for the surprise duet, barely showed his face throughout, keeping his face hidden beneath a grey cap.

After downing Hennessy from the bottle and pouring it over the stage and front row of fans, he gestured towards a co-performer for a lighter before puffing away as his friends carried the song.

He was later seen enjoying the adoration of female fans while mingling with audience members after the show.

The pentecostal Hillsong Church, which has roots in Sydney, is thought to be a particular favourite of the young star, who flew to the Australian city for a gathering after being referred to as a 'delegate' by the church in June

'People come from across the world to Sydney each year to attend Hillsong Conference. Justin is here - like tens of thousands of others - as a delegate who is seeking to build stronger foundations into his life,' they announced in a short statement.

While the church does not disapprove of the use of alcohol, 'debauchery and a lifestyle of drunkenness' is considered a sin.
