SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Citing personal reasons and an opportunity work in Puerto Rico, Garabet Carlos Avedissian has stepped down as head coach of the Costa Rica women's national team.

The 55-year-old directed the Ticas to their first berth in the FIFA Women's World Cup thanks to a runner-up finish in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, where they lost to the United States in the final.  He also led the under-20 to a third-place finish in the 2014 CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship and a place in the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

"I must confess we were surprised by Carlos’ decision, but in his resignation letter alleged to have better job opportunities," said Rafael Vargas, general secretary of the Costa Rican Football Federation.

Avedissian admitted it was a difficult choice to make, leaving a team that has improved considerably.

"It was not an easy decision, but I had to do," he said.  "I think about my future and I think my family needs stability."

Vargas said the federation hopes to name a successor to Avedissian within 15 days.

The team is scheduled to return to practice on January 12, training under the direction of technical assistant Amelia Sanchez and trainer Jose Valverde.
