Hillary Clinton wheeled out her best Donald Trump impression before taking part in a rendition of Lean On Me during a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Appearing on the opening episode of the new series, hosted by Miley Cyrus, Clinton took part in a skit with Kate McKinnon, the latest in a long line of female comics to impersonate her on the show.

McKinnon played Clinton, while Clinton took on the role of a bartender named Val, helping the fake Clinton to blow off steam after 'a rough couple of 22 years.'

Lamenting her flagging campaign, 'Clinton' can be heard complaining 'why won't the people just let me lead, just give me the hammer and nails and let me fix everything?'

As the conversation continues, 'Clinton' turns to potential political rival Trump, moaning that 'all anybody wants to talk about is Donald Trump'.

'Val' shoots back: 'Trump, isn't he the guy that's like.. "ugh, you're all losers," mocking Trump's distinctive accent.

The conversation then turns to whether or not Trump can win the Republican nomination race, with 'Clinton' vowing that 'he must' so that 'I can be the one to take him down'.

McKinnon's Clinton then promises: 'I will destroy him him and mount his hair in the oval office.'

The skit also poked fun at Clinton's political record, in particular her opposition to the Keystone pipeline and her support of gay marriage.

Bartender 'Val' mentions that she opposes the pipeline, and 'Clinton' enthusiastically agrees, adding: 'I took a long time to decide that, I do do believe it.'

A similar criticism was aimed at the real-life Clinton's support for gay marriage after another bartender appears to compliment 'Clinton' on her stance, saying his brother is gay.

'Clinton' then replies, 'well I could have supported it sooner' to which 'Val' responds that she supported it sooner than a lot of people.

With a wink, McKinnon's Clinton then repeated: 'It could have been sooner'.

The sketch also took on Clinton's attempt to appeal to younger people despite being a grandmother, saying she 'must work in Brooklyn' because she seems so with it.

Indeed Clinton's appearance on SNL was likely designed to make her appear more likeable, as her campaign has championed her 'real person' credentials in recent weeks - despite the wealthy trappings that come with being a part of one of America's political dynasties.

The show's young target audience will also have been a big draw for Hillary's campaign team, as they hope her policies will chime with the Millennial generation.

At one point 'Val' even asks 'Clinton' for her ID, saying she doesn't seem to be old enough to have grandchildren.

'Clinton' responds that she has a granddaughter, adding: 'She calls me madam President'.

Notably absent was any joke about the email scandal which has engulfed Clinton's campaign for months, perhaps showing it is still too big a threat to make fun of.

'Bill Clinton', played by Darrell Hammond, also made an appearance mocking Hillary's inability to take a vacation, with the fake Clinton struggling to even pronounce it.

The pair then finished the sketch with a rendition of Lean On Me, with the real Clinton's performance appearing slightly awkward next to McKinnon.

Clinton made a final appearance after the sketch was over, introducing host Miley Cyrus as she performed the first of two musical numbers.

Republicans didn't fare nearly as well as SNL began its 41st season.

The opening sketch made fun of Trump and his wife, Melania, and a faux commercial pitched a pill that cures people of thinking they can be president — specifically low-polling GOP candidates Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee and Jim Gilmore.

Clinton has struggled to show herself as warm and personable with a sense of humor, qualities that have been valued in modern campaigns driven by broadcast media and now social media.

The former secretary of state has already appeared this year on talk shows hosted by Jimmy Fallon and Ellen DeGeneres.

Hillary's appearance comes after she delivered a speech to the gay advocacy group Human Rights Campaign vowing to 'stand up for LGBT Americans' if she is elected.

She told supporters: 'I see the injustices and the dangers that you and your families still face. I'm running for President to stand up for the fundamental rights of LGBT Americans.'

Tonight's appearance is not the first time Hillary has appeared on Saturday Night Live.

She featured on the show once before back in 2008 when she starred alongside her then-imitator Amy Poehler.
