Army veteran Chris Mintz, 30, tried to block deranged gunman Chris Harper-Mercer - who murdered nine at Umpqua Community College on Thursday - from entering the classroom as he fired his gun. Even as he lay on the ground bleeding, the father told the shooter: 'It's my son's birthday.'  His son Tyrik, who has non-verbal autism, turned six on Thursday. After hearing this, Harper-Mercer continued to shoot Mintz.

Perez Hilton sparked an online backlash after sharing a snap of himself and his two-year-old son in the shower together. The celebrity blogger, whose real name is Mario Lavanderia, posted the picture - where both he and son Mario are grinning widely - on Instagram yesterday. NEW The 9th grader charged with raping and murdering his teacher has told police he turned on 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer (left) when she 'insulted' him. 'After she insulted me, that's when I became the teacher,' Philip Chism (right) said omniously, according to court documents describing a taped police interview. Chism, now 16, said Ritzer provoked the attack with a 'trigger' word, which he would not disclose. He was 14 in the fall of 2013 when he allegedly raped Ritzer in a bathroom after algebra class then slit her throat with a box cutter. Prosecutors claim he then dragged her body into the woods in a recycling barrel and placed a branch 'sexually' in her body. Her body is pictured (inset) being carried out of the woods. Two years later, Chism is headed to trial as an adult on rape, robbery and murder charges. Jury selection begins on Wednesday in Essex Superior Court in Salem.

Jennifer Medina had been working in the busy Mission Hospital Emergency Room, in Mission Viejo, on Friday night when the victim of a hit-and-run was brought in. Unconscious and in a critical condition, doctors worked frantically to save the life of the young John Doe. Medina and her colleague were tasked with identifying the patient. But when the nurse opened his wallet, she instantly recognized the I.D. Describing the moment she said she had always feared, she realized the man in the E.R. was her own brother Cesar Andres Medina.

Firefighters responded to the building (main) in the Borough Park neighborhood on Saturday after the fire was reported around 1pm. Two artists are developing a bizarre new method of burial in which the deceased person is stuffed inside a giant capsule and buried below ground to nourish a newly-planted tree. Italian designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel have created the 'Capsula Mundi' concept - a radical programme designed to 'promote the realization of green cemeteries'. They hope the astonishing proposed method of burial will catch on to the point cemeteries will 'no longer by full of tombstones and will become a sacred forest'.

A dramatic stand-off took place between a herd of elephants and two hungry lionesses, in the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania. The elephants were desperate to defend a calf, which had become separated from the group while trying to cross the Mwagusi River and was easy prey for the predatory lions. The baby elephant screamed out in distress after coming under attack from the lions.
