Calming your nerves, Carole? Duchess of Cambridge's mother necks a mini bottle of wine as watching England's defeat at the Rugby World Cup gets too much

We're used to seeing Prince Harry knock back a pint of beer or two but it was Carole Middleton that needed a bit of the strong stuff while watching England's agonising rugby defeat.

Seemingly in need of something to calm her nerves, the 60-year-old was spotted necking a mini bottle of white wine as she cheered on the home team against arch-rivals Australia at Twickenham Stadium in London on Saturday evening.

And while the royal who was sitting behind her looked relatively calm, Carole was seen getting extremely fired-up during the game, holding her hands to her head and screaming at the players - although husband Michael, 66, managed to maintain his composure.

The pair were joined by their son James Middleton and seated in front of Prince Harry and his close friends, nightclub owner Guy Pelly and jeweller Charlie Van Straubenzee.

As the match continued to go from bad to worse for Chris Robshaw and his men, Carole was seen pouring herself a glass of wine, propping her tumbler up inside a small jute shopper bag.

Later on, the mother-of-three clearly got a bit peckish and was seen tucking into a packet of crisps.

The Middleton clan are known for being sports enthusiasts and Kate joined husband William and her brother-in-law to watch England's recent clash with Wales.

Kate and her younger sister Pippa Middleton are keen fans of tennis and are regularly spotted in the Royal Box at Wimbledon cheering on Scot Andy Murray.

Meanwhile James, who is dating TV personality Donna Air, has been a noticeable face in a number of Rugby World Cup matches during the tournament so far.

Carole looked elegant in her VIP seating, dressed in a plain cream jumper and silk neck-scarf with a mustard yellow swirl pattern, Carole warded off any late-night chills with a chic quilted navy jacket.

Like her daughter, the Duchess of Cambridge, Carole is famed for her glossy brunette hairdo, which was styled into gentle waves and left to hand loose around her shoulders.

She completed her pitch-side look with pearl-drop earrings and a silver brooch.

Meanwhile, businessman Michael opted for a smart, dark green blazer jacket, deep turquoise V-neck jumper and blue shirt - opting for a laid back look by leaving the top button undone.

Sports fan Prince Harry was attending the match in his capacity as honorary president of England Rugby 2015, the organising committee staging the contest.

The Queen's grandson, who played rugby at school and is vice patron of the Rugby Football Union, attended the opening ceremony last month with his brother Prince William and William's wife Kate.

Harry gave a speech in which he told supporters, and the millions watching at home: 'This evening marks the beginning of a celebration of rugby which I hope will inspire current players, those new to the game and future generations.'

England were knocked out of the tournament after being torn apart by a superb Australia display at a stunned Twickenham. The final score was 33-13.

Two converted first-half tries and four penalties from Wallaby fly-half Bernard Foley brought a deserved win on a black night for England's men in white.

The result means both Australia and Wales are into the quarter-finals.

It is the first time that a host nation has gone out at the group stage of the tournament.

And to complete their humiliation, it is also the first time England have failed to make the knockout stages.
