And Beyoncé appeared to be channelling a 1940s gangster look when she and Jay Z went out for dinner at Del Posto in The Meatpacking district in New York on Saturday evening.

Of course, the Sasha Fierce pop star, put her own twist on the theme.

The 34-year-old wore a long black alice + olivia overcoat over a white shirt, skinny black tie and skintight leather trousers with wide bell bottoms.

And she topped off her ensemble with a black trilby giving the overall effect of an old-time gangster from a Hollywood film.

Her 45-year-old husband, Jay Z, was more casually dressed in a black raincoat over a black T-shirt, baggy leather trousers and sand-coloured Timberland boots.

The 99 Problems rapper, record producer and entrepreneur completed his outfit with a brown hat.

He followed behind his wife of seven years as they left the restaurant, giving no chance of a public display of affection - very different from the Instagram snap they posted on Saturday.

In it, Jay Z lovingly embraced Beyoncé from behind as they both smiled from ear to ear.

The superstar sizzled in a low-cut gold gown that showed off plenty of cleavage and featured a thigh-high split.

Beyoncé, Jay Z and their three-year-old daughter Blue Ivy have recently returned to New York after enjoying a luxurious retreat in the Mediterranean with stops including Naples, Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and Sardinia.
