And Rooney Mara once again showed off her strong fashion chops when she stepped out in New York on Tuesday. 

The 30-year-old actress rocked a lace dress over a white shirt as she left the Today show.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star has been promoting her latest film in the city - the Peter Pan origins-story fantasy adventure Pan. 

Rooney added black ankle boots to toughen up her ethereal black A-Line dress, which showed off her slim figure. 

The porcelain-skinned star vamped it up with a slick of bright red lipstick, keeping her fair features otherwise light on make-up.

Her chestnut locks framed her face, and you could be forgiven in thinking her round sunglasses are permanently attached as she wears them with such routine regularity. 

The sister of Fantastic Four star Kate Mara recently responded to criticism of her casting as Tiger Lily - who was always considered to be a Native American princess in the Peter Pan story.  

Speaking to People at the premiere on Sunday in New York, Rooney said she felt bad about it: 'It wasn't great.'

She added: 'It was something that I thought about before I met with [director] Joe (Wright). 

'When I met with Joe and heard what his plans for it were, it was something I really wanted to be a part of.

'But I totally sympathize with why people were upset and feel really bad about it.'

The beauty stars alongside Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard and a Hook played by Garrett Hedlund in the movie. 

The Social Network actress - whose mother's family founded the Pittsburgh Steelers and father's family founded New York Giants - has received accolades recently for her role in Carol, which is released on November 20.

In May, she scooped the Best Actress award at Cannes Film festival for her portrayal of Therese Belivet in the Cate Blanchett film. 

She's dating director Charlie McDowell, 32 - the son of Clockwork Orange actor Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen, who won an Oscar winner for Melvin and Howard in 1980.
