What your lips REALLY say about your love life: Expert claims lipstick choice reveals your dating style, and says J-Lo's burgundy means she's 'strong' while Emma Stone's pink suggests she's 'hard-to-read'

  • Author and psychologist Karen Pine used color theory to explain what each lipstick shade says about your dating personality

Whether its fiery red or a deep Bordeaux, the lipstick you choose to wear on a first date reveals a great deal about your personality according to a famous fashion psychologist.

Karen Pine, the author of Mind What You Wear: The Psychology of Fashion, used her knowledge of color theory to explain to Mashable what woman is unknowingly communicating to her date when she puts on her favorite shade of lipstick.

And while there are hundreds of lipstick shades to choose from, the professor analyzed the seven most popular looks - including a bare lip, a bold red shade and a bright fuchsia option.

RED

Karen explained that red is a color 'associated with passion, energy and action', so a woman who chooses to wear it is 'sending out emotionally charged signals'.

'You’re a bold, confident woman and one in her sexual prime,' Karen added.

Taylor Swift, 25, is often seen donning a red lip, and the singer has revealed that her favorite products are NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl and more recently Ruby Woo by MAC.

FUCHSIA

According to Karen, women who choose to wear fuchsia lipstick on a first date are looking for 'stimulating conversation' and 'someone out of the ordinary' as the color 'suggests enlightenment and creativity'.

'With its undertones of purple, you’ve gone for a regal hue that conveys an image of sophistication and uniqueness,' she noted.

And while it may not be their signature lip color, Charlize Theron, Rihanna and Lea Michele have all been seen wearing fuchsia lipstick on the red carpet.

HOT PINK

Karen explained that pink is usually the 'color of innocence', however, an electric version of the popular shade signifies a mixed-message of approach and avoidance.

'Your date may be confused as to what you want from a relationship, and maybe you're not too sure yourself, but ultimately it must appeal to your heart, body and soul,' she said.

When Emma Stone, 26, dyed her hair a near-platinum blonde in 2013, makeup artist Mai Quynh used hot pink on her electric pink - turning it into an instant trend.

'I didn’t know I was a champion; I’m honored. A pioneer… like Annie Oakley!' she told the Huffington Post of launching the pink lipstick trend that year. 'I never know the shade name so it would be hard to tell you my favorite, but I love fuchsias and really, really bright pinks that’s for sure.'

CORAL

'You are approaching the date with enthusiasm, playfulness and the right amount of balance,' Karen said of women who opt for coral lips. 'You want to be noticed, know where you are going and may be in a hurry to get there.'

She also noted that women who favor coral are fun to be around because they are able to go with the flow.

In 2013, Jessica Alba wowed on the red carpet when she matched her matte coral lips to her stunning Oscar de la Renta gown.

BURGUNDY

A Bordeaux lip color is the sign of a strong, yet mysterious woman that takes a while to get to know.

'Your color reflects your strong, decisive character, but you may find yourself holding back on the date, unwilling to give away too much too soon,' Karen said,

'Your date needs to be patient,' she added.

Jennifer Lopez was ahead of the vampy lip trend in 2012 when make-up artist Mary Phillips painted her put with Tom Ford Beauty's Black Orchid for the premiere of her film What To Expect When You're Expecting.

Three years later she rocked a similar beauty look at the 2015 Tony Awards.

NUDE

When it comes to finding a partner, women who favor a nude lipstick are vulnerable with their approach, and when they meet the right person they are willing to wear their heart on their sleeve, according to Karen.

She explained that they 'want to be taken seriously, have nothing to hide and a lot to give'.

Like her character Olivia Pope, Scandal star Kerry Washington has mastered the art of the nude lip for red carpet events, so it wouldn't be surprising if happens to be her go-to date look as well.

Kerry's make-up artist Sheri Knight revealed how she created Kerry's nude lips on the set of Scandal, explaining to Allure last year that fills in her lips with Laura Mercier Lip Liner in Hazelnut Tea, and then she dabs on a caramel-tinted balm, Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Warm Caramel.

'You get this perfectly even finish that heightens the natural color of her lips,' she said. 'And because liners tend to have a slightly drier finish, it really stays on - even through the kissing scenes.'

BARE LIP

Karen said that a woman who chooses not to wear lipstick is looking for someone who is open and honest because they don't want to 'play games or get off on the wrong foot' with their date.

They are essentially telling their potential partners: 'This is me, take me as I am, or not at all.'

Gwyneth Paltrow, 43, frequently shares pictures of herself sans make-up on her Instagram page, and when it comes to her red carpet looks, she tends to keep her lips as natural looking as possible.

The actress has previously admitted that she has given up worrying about strangers' opinions of her.

'The older I get, I realize it doesn't matter what people who don't know you think. It doesn't matter. You're wasting your energy,' she told Red magazine in 2013.
