SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: A manly new look for Downton Abbey's Lady Mary

After making a dramatic return to Downton Abbey on Sunday night, actor Allen Leech — who plays Tom Branson —has proved that even in real life he prefers to make an entrance with a bang.

The 34-year-old, who has just joined Instagram, deliberately misled his fans by pretending to be co-star Michelle Dockery, aka Lady Mary.

In the first picture he sports a short black wig to resemble the brunette actress, although does nothing to disguise his masculine physique.

Taking a selfie in the mirror using his iPhone, but hiding his face, he writes: ‘To celebrate joining Instagram I’m posting this image of the Lady Dockers getting ready for work!!’

Two minutes later he posts a second picture, revealing a gleeful expression as he explains: ‘Only joking it’s me in a wig!!’

Let’s hope Michelle has a good sense of humour.

BBC presenter Michael Dean, who interviewed Grace Kelly and Morecambe & Wise on his 1960s TV show Late Night Line-Up, has died aged 82. But he did not go gently into the night. Two years ago, the former amateur boxing champ landed a few good punches on a thug who robbed him at a London cash machine. ‘I hadn’t hit anyone in about 50 years,’ Michael said. ‘I threw my cap at him and hit him with a left hook and right cross.’

Beware of bad guy Ritchie, Becks told

Sir Alan Parker, director of Bugsy Malone, has thrown a custard pie at Guy Ritchie.

‘The funniest quote I heard from David Beckham was: “If Guy Ritchie thinks I’m gonna be good then obviously I will be.” I felt like saying to him: “Do you know Guy Ritchie’s not a good director? That’s the worst kind of recommendation!”’

Beckham has cameos in Ritchie’s latest films The Man From U.N.C.L.E and King Arthur. But is Parker, an old friend of Ritchie’s father John, just joking? Guy was one of the first people in England to sit a film studies GCSE and interviewed Sir Alan for his course in 1983.

‘It’s absolutely farcical when I think of all the actors that have paid their dues,’ continues Sir Alan. ‘He [David] wouldn’t sell a movie and if he’s bad he’ll just embarrass himself.’

Ewan's search for his first love - a VW Beetle!

Many of Ewan McGregor’s peers have swapped Fords for Ferraris, but the Perth-born Trainspotting actor, 44, still dreams of the Volkswagen Beetle he bought at 16.

‘The day I bought my first car,’ he reminisces alongside a photograph of his old banger. ‘I was 16. I’d washed dishes for 2 years and saved the £500 she cost. It seems she’s gone now, old ESL 380V. I can’t find her. If you ever come across her let me know. Cheers.’

Zara swaps tiara for Corrie hairnet

The Queen’s granddaughter looked a dead ringer for Coronation Street’s Ena Sharples on Sunday.

At the Dauntsey Park Horse Trials in Wiltshire, Princess Anne’s equestrian daughter Zara Phillips, 34, showed off her hairnet as she changed from her show-jumping gear into cross-country kit.

Played by Violet Carson, Ena (inset) was described as ‘refusing to adjust to the changing times’ — so comparisons with Zara, who famously wore a tongue stud, end where they begin.

Tory MP Mike Penning has grown a grey beard. Former Guardsman Penning, in Manchester for the Tory conference, has been making wisecracks that he now resembles Jeremy Corbyn. This is not quite true, as Penning is, ahem, on the portly side. But there is certainly a passing likeness to Captain Birdseye.
