Emily Skye is proof everything on Instagram is not as it seems - and that's a good thing.

The 30-year-old model turned fitness guru overcame her insecurities to post her first make up free selfie to show her one million Instagram followers that nobody is perfect.

The image was posted alongside a lengthy caption that read: '"Perfection" doesn't exist! We're all human beings with flaws - remember that'.

'I just want everyone to know that NOBODY is perfect no matter how perfect they appear to be,' the Gold Coast local wrote.

'This may seem silly, but it took me years to be able to let people see me completely make up free.

'I used to be so incredibly insecure with myself that it would cause me anxiety just the thought of being seen without my "mask" on. It was a horrible way to live - I felt like I was in jail.

'I'm finally not afraid to show my bare face and my flaws...in fact I embrace them now.'

The post earlier this week, that attracted more than 14,500 likes, was met with a positive response from Miss Skye's followers who praised the fitness model for speaking out.

'I love how real you are! You're an awesome role model,' wrote another.

Miss Skye recently opened up toThe Huffington Post Australia about her battle with depression.

She was on anti-depressants for much of her teenage years as she struggled to cope with bullying, low self-esteem and a string of abusive relationships.

She sought solace through exercise, and said she wanted to help other women with a mental illness.

'Everyone has self doubt at some stage - it is normal,' she wrote on Instagram.

'I do sometimes feel doubt creeping in too, but I refuse to let it take over me. 

'I stop thinking negative thoughts like that and tell myself affirmations. Positive and motivating thoughts that help me, not hold me back.

'Give it a go! Start believing in yourself, start living for you and stop those negative thoughts from preventing you from going for you dreams.'
