Former New York Rangers bad boy Sean Avery arrested on drug charges after traffic stop

  • Avery, 35, was allegedly throwing objects at passing cars he was pulled over and charged with possession of narcotics
  • The arrest came just days before Avery, who appeared on the 18th season of Dancing with the Stars, was set to marry his model fiancee
  • Police say Avery was found in possession of oxycodone--all charges against him are misdemeanors

Former New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery was arrested this week on charges he threw objects at moving cars in the Hamptons and was subsequently found to be in possession of narcotics, police say.

The retired hockey bad boy was picked up following a routine September 30 traffic stop by police in Southampton a day after they say he threw the unidentified objects.

Avery illegally possessed the prescription drugs acetaminophen with oxycodone and roxicodone, according to authorities, though his attorney disputes this allegation.

He was charged with the misdemeanors of fourth-degree criminal mischief and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The arrest came just 11 days before he was due to wed Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Hilary Rhoda in a Hamptons ceremony this Saturday, the New York Post reports.

Avery was released following his arrest on $500 bail and handed a ticket to appear in court.

The avid social media user took to Twitter on Tuesday to post what he says is evidence he had prescriptions for the drugs in question.

The post showed a photo of a list of drugs the former NHL pro is prescribed, including various prescriptions for oxycontin.

Avery wrote along with the photo: 'Pretty disgusting I even have to do this but unfortunately it's the same old story. Have fun with this one'

His attorney, Edward Burke Jr., has backed up the claim in Avery's tweet.

'Mr. Avery has prescriptions for the medications that were the basis of this charge,' said Burke.

According to a source at the Post, Avery has a reputation for going after motorists who speed in his Hamptons village.

And this would not be the first outburst to land the former athlete in trouble.

In November, Avery reportedly had a 'meltdown' that led to his getting fired from the off-Broadway show he'd been slated to perform in.

When he appeared on season 18 of Dancing with the Stars, Avery was voted off on the second episode in what was widely reported to be a dismissal born of bad blood between Avery and a producer.

And prior to his retirement from the NHL in 2012, Avery had a reputation for having a short fuse that often landed him in hot water with his team and the league.

As of Wednesday, it appeared unclear whether last week's arrests would interfere with Avery's impending nuptials.

He's been ordered back into court at an unknown future date.
