Memphis Grizzlies player Matt Barnes only stopped beating Knicks' coach Derek Fisher when his children begged him to, a report claims.

The two NBA heavyweights were once close friends, but have been driven apart since Fisher began dating Barnes's estranged with Gloria Govan.

On Saturday, Barnes allegedly drove 15 minutes from his home to Fisher's in Los Angeles to attack him.

According to TMZ, he didn't stop until his young son begged him to.

Barnes has since claimed he went to the house because he was concerned for his son's safety after receiving an ominous text, reports claim.

An unidentified source said that Kicks coach Derek Fisher (left) and Govan, who stars on basketball Wives LA, have been dating for 'a few months', and that when Barnes heard Fisher was at Gloria's home he 'went crazy' drove there to 'beat the sh**t' out of Fisher

Speaking at practice on Thursday, he told ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne he 'got a text from his six-year old son Carter around 10 pm that had him concerned'.

He said that he call his son on FaceTime and 'when I saw his face I knew something was wrong... his head was down on the couch and he said "Mommies friend Derek is here"'.

Thoug he refused to discuss what happened at the house, he made clear that he and Fisher no longer associate with each other.

'We were friends. We were good friends at one point.

'It's a personal matter. My focus is on basketball. Being here early, I don't want to start it off by having anything negative.'

The New York Post reports that the incident occurred when Barnes who was training in Santa Barbara, California, heard Fisher, was at his estranged wife Gloria Govan's house on Saturday.

The New York Post reports that Fisher and Govan, who stars on basketball Wives LA, have been dating for 'a few months', and that when Barnes heard Fisher was at Gloria's home he 'went crazy' drove there to 'beat the sh**t' out of Fisher.

'Derek was in Gloria's back yard with about 10 people having a bonfire on Saturday,' an unidentified witness told The New York Post.

'Derek's separated from his wife and there's a relationship with [Gloria].'

When Barnes heard Fisher was at Govan's home he decided to confront his former LA Lakers teammate.

Fisher and Barnes had been friends and were teammates with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2010-12.

'Someone told Matt that Fisher was at the house and he drove down there - he went over to confront Derek.'

According to a witness Fisher was not badly injured he will likely not press charges.

'Matt came after Derek but he only had a few scratches... Derek's not going to press charges, he's going to let it go.'

Fisher left the scene before police arrived but Govan may file a restraining order against Barnes, reports The New York Post.

Yahoo reports that The Knicks, Grizzlies and NBA security will begin to probe Saturday night's events.

'We are aware and currently gathering information regarding today's report involving Matt Barnes,' the Grizzlies said in a statement.

Barnes was arrested in 2010 on suspicion of domestic violence but he disputed the charges.

'Matt and I were together for eight years. And I think the course of our relationship is just due to evolution. We're always gonna be good friends. Obviously we have kids together,' said Govan on her split from Barnes this year.

Barnes made headlines recently after he told TMZ that he and singer Rihanna were 'just past the crush stage' and Rihanna responded by saying she'd never even met Barnes.

Fisher missed the Knicks practice on Monday for what the team termed 'a personal matter'.

Sources close to Fisher said he was not at practice due to a problem with his private jet.

The Grizzlies and Knicks play January 16 in Memphis and February 5 in New York.
