'It was totally screwed up': Actress Rose McGowan reveals pressures of growing up on screen 'messed' with her brain

She has never been afraid to speak her mind, and often gets herself into hot water because of it.

And now Rose McGowan has given more of an insight into what it was like being a teen star in Hollywood.

The 43-year-old brunette revealed to Hong Kong's Prestige magazine she had some of her most important life experiences on screen instead of in reality while working as an actress - and says it left her very messed up.

She said: 'These normal life markers happened for me in the movies rather than real life. It was totally screwed up.'

She added: 'When it came to all those typical teenage experiences, mine actually happened in the films I worked on. 

'My prom, for example, was in the movie Jawbreaker - I had to go insane during a prom scene with the entire crowd throwing things at me.

'My high school experience was summed up by Doom Generation. Screamed (and) Charmed was my college years.'

Born in Florence, in Italy and moving to the US when she was 10, Rose said she felt she became mature very early, revealing she felt she was a fully formed adult by the age of three.

From a family of seven brothers and sisters, with hippy parents, she says she 'pretty much' raised them.

She first encountered Hollywood and the world of acting when she was 17 years old, after being discovered by an agent.

However she says she soon began to feel like she was nothing more than an image, not a person - and that image was something she hardly even recognised.

She said: 'I felt I was being mis-sold as a commodity and not a person.'

Rose revealed she had been raised in a gender neutral environment without mirrors so found the obsession with her female physique strange.  

'There was one point in my career when I was so heavily retouched in every photo that I completely forgot what I looked like. It messed with my brain heavily.'

Rose put her acting career on hiatus after suffering a number of injuries on set. She says she was left with $700,000 of medical bills after having three surgeries.

On making the decision to return to acting, she got herself into hot water when she Tweeted she had been encouraged to wear push up bra and form-fitting tank which showed off her cleavage to a casting call for an Adam Sandler film.

Her honesty in revealing the request saw her get fired by her agent.

She said the incident made her think she may as well become a spokesperson for women.

The actress has now decided to go behind the camera, and one of her first forays is the movie Dawn which was highly acclaimed at this years Sundance Film Festival.

She said she wanted to make the film to explore the damage done to women and girls, which she believes they experience on a daily basis. 

Rose posed for a series of  high fashion photos to go with her chat - and she showed off her quixotic style in the pictures.
