She is one of the few stars in Hollywood that has chosen not to embrace the rise of social media sites.

And Cate Blanchett has revealed that she simply 'can’t handle’ the current selfie culture in a frank new interview, saying: 'I cannot for the life of me work out why adults are participating in that s***'.

The Oscar winner made the revelation while discussing her thoughts about society's ‘pathetic’ need to receive validation from other people’s reactions to their pictures.

Speaking to Yahoo, the 46-year-old was asked why she believed women going make-up free for roles still manages to garner so much discussion and praise.

Cate responded, ‘I think it’s because people constantly are taking pictures of ourselves to send them to people to see if they like me, “do they like me?”’

She added: ‘It’s pathetic, the whole thing about people worrying about what other people are going to think.’

When asked if she felt the same about the ‘selfie culture’, the Blue Jasmine star said she 'just can’t handle it.'

The stunning actress  has been busy promoting her latest film Truth, which she stars in as journalist Mary Mapes, alongside Robert Redford.

It tells the true story of the CBS producer, and 60 minutes team who alongside Dan Rather, (played by Robert) were at the centre of a controversy over a story about George W Bush's national guard service, which took place during the Vietnam war.

The film is based on the memoir by Mary - Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power.

However, she has also been speaking about how her adopted baby daughter has made a huge impact on the star's household.

The Australian actress revealed in an interview with Good Morning America that little Edith's three brothers have taken to their sibling with much love and affection.

She told host George Stephanopoulos: 'We have been blessed, we have been really blessed. So I have three boys and a girl she's great.

'It is a wonderful thing when you see your children becoming a pack, sort of independent of you and I am very proud of my sons.'
