NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton catches young woman smoking weed on the street, grabs the joint out of her mouth and then throws it down a sewer

  • New York's top cop caught a woman smoking marijuana near Wall Street Thursday morning
  • With the help of some of his security officers, Bratton walked up to the woman, took her joint away and threw it down a drain
  • He then gave the college-aged woman a stern talking to - but did not arrest her

A young woman's morning joint was confiscated by NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, when he caught a whiff of marijuana walking in downtown Manhattan and snapped into beat cop mode.

New York City's top cop told the New York Post that he was leaving a meeting in the Wall Street area Thursday morning around 8:30am when he smelled pot and caught a college-aged woman 'happily puffing away' on her way to school.

'So my security officer came up on one side, I came up on the other and tapped her on the shoulder and she looked over. And I wish I had a photograph of that face. She instantly recognized me,' Bratton said.

Bratton says he 'politely' grabbed the joint out of her mouth and then deposited it in a 'local sewer' before giving the young lady a stern talking to, saying she might perform better in school if she wasn't high.

While Bratton technically could have arrested the young woman, but he said he let her go as an example to officers in the field.

'If you’re smoking it in public we will potentially arrest you, but we encourage officers to use the scale they are authorized to use - warning, admonitions, summons, arrest if necessary,' he said.

In New York City, it's legal to carry around small amounts of marijuana but it's illegal to smoke it in public.

While appointed as commissioner under liberal Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has admitted to smoking marijuana in his youth, Bratton is very publicly no fan of weed.

He has also blamed the city's weed dealers for a 20 per cent increase in murders for the sitting in March, saying: 'The seemingly innocent drug that’s being legalized around the country - in this city, people are killing each other over marijuana.'
