For any actress, going through a high-profile divorce is never easy.

But Nicole Kidman has revealed how her and Tom Cruise's marriage breakdown in 2001 mostly helped rather than hindered her Hollywood career.

The Academy-Award winner, who is currently performing to critical acclaim in London's West End, made the revelation while addressing attendees at Friday's Women in the World summit in the capital.

Marriage saved her: Nicole Kidman confessed at London's Women in the World summit that she was the 'loneliest she'd ever been' following her divorce from Tom Cruise - although it temporarily improved her career

'Out of my divorce came work that was applauded so that was an interesting thing for me,' the 48-year-old Australian told audience members.

However, it also came with its obvious disadvantages and Nicole was left feeling the 'loneliest she'd ever been' after winning an Oscar.

'[The divorce] culminated in winning an Oscar and that caused an epiphany which was, "This isn’t the answer".

'I was holding a gold statue and I was the loneliest I’d ever been.'

Talking about the plaudits she received for pouring her energy into professional endeavours, she said: 'I was running from my life at that time, I wasn’t able to handle the reality of it and as an actor you have this wonderful thing where you can go and get lost in somebody else’s life.

Instead, Nicole confessed that she actually found fulfillment by marrying husband Keith Urban.

Discussing the relationship with the event's founder, Nicole said: 'We didn’t really know each other – we got to know each other during our marriage.'

For fans of the star, such personal insight is a rare thing.

However, while Nicole was happy to talk about her own relationships at the summit, she did not speak out on her family's recent happy news after her and Tom's adopted daughter Isabella - known as Bella - tied the knot with British I.T. consultant Max Parker on September 18 in London.

A new report by People Magazine has claimed Nicole was completely unaware her daughter was tying the knot last month.

However the actress is 'very happy for Bella,' a source told the publication.

The insider insisted reports Nicole had actually helped plan the wedding were false, but added that the Australian only wants whats best for the 22-year-old.

'She, like all mothers, wants her child to be happy, and it surely seems Bella is very happy,' the source said.

Nicole joined a host of high-profile names including Theresa May, Winnie Harlow, a top model with vitiligo skin condition, and Cara Delevingne to speak at the Women in the World summit on Friday.
