She is one of the few singers to earn herself at EGOT - an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.

And Liza Minnelli showed just why she has achieved that accolade when, determined to fulfil a concert date, she took a 200 mile Uber ride so she could perform on stage.

The 69-year-old star was set to headline a gala, celebrating the opening of the new Humanities and Fine Arts Center at Cape Fear Community College, North Carolina last Saturday.

However after her plane took off from Charlotte where she had been catching a connecting flight, it was forced to return to the airport after encountering severe turbulence.

Liza, determined she wouldn't let her audience down - summoned an uber, which drove her and two assistants to the gig.

The 200 mile trip cost $200 and her driver was none other than former Egyptian Olympic handball player Ahmed El-Awady, who competed at the 1992 and 1996 summer Olympics.

Liza's rep confirmed to the BBC: 'Her connecting flight from Charlotte suffered extreme turbulence on its way to Wilmington.

'The pilot flew back to Charlotte.'

The drive, which went on through the night, saw the star arrive at her destination for Saturday morning.

Liza made it to the stage, a black tie gala, and wowed the 1500 strong sold - out crowd belting out some of her classics. 

The daughter of star of stage and screen Judy Garland, she has been showered with awards for her singing prowess.

Liza has won four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special “Legends” Grammy, two Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy.

She is considered to be one of the entertainment world’s most respected performers, with her talents and achievements straddling the worlds of stage, screen, and music.
