The world's first zero emissions yacht is nearing completion - and it sure has been a long time coming.

For seven years, Turkish group Ned Ship and Solarwave, a renewable energy company, have been working on the 'Solarwave 62'.'

And while other yachts use solar panels for part of their operations, the Solarwave 62' will be the first to run entirely on the sun's rays.

The first model is expected to be ready within the next two months and will have a reported price tag of between €2 million and €2.5 million (£1.47 million and £1.85 million).

Measuring 62ft in length, the Solarwave 62' can cruise at speeds between seven and 13 knots.

Egon Faiss, Marketing Director of Ned Ship, said: 'The owners must know that on green yachts there will be different handling, and they will have to use the yacht at a speed that is different to traditional fuel based models.

'You cannot go full speed for several hours, as this will be not be an intelligent way to handle a solar yacht.'

Owners will also need to be diligent with their use of appliances in the yacht's full kitchen.

In order to make power last as long as possible, Ned Ship looked into ways to make the yacht extremely light.

Each Solarwave 62' will be configured to the owner's wishes and the company believes it will hold its value better than conventional yachts.

Some of its features include three to five guest cabins, depending on the buyer's preference, a retractable sky roof, and an outdoor dining space and sun deck.

Egon added: 'We've been thinking for a while about such systems, but now the time is for real luxury yachts based on green energy.

'If you drive a Tesla full speed there will be really not a long range. But to drive one is so much fun - especially having no noise.

'That's the same on the solar yachts.'
