High street spending grows at fastest pace in 20 months thanks to Rugby World Cup and

NEW Last month saw like-for-like retail sales increase by 2.6 per cent, marking the fastest growth since January 2014, new findings reveal. With spending up thanks to back-to-school sales and the Rugby World Cup, year-on-year total sales made by people across the country have risen by 3.9 per cent, the British Retail Consortium/KPMG Sales Monitor said. Despite this positive outlook, the report said the inclusion of the August Bank Holiday into September's data distorts the findings, with boosted fashion, furniture and back-to-school sales.

A new interactive map claims to define the social characteristics of every neighbourhood in the UK -with a level of detail focusing down to individual streets or groups of streets. The Consumer Data Research Centre based its research on 2011 census data, and tried to categorise the residents of individual postcodes - that is as few as two or three hundred persons - according to ethnicity, employment and income, family situation and life-expectations.
