New York Giants player could lose HIS FOOT due to mystery MRSA infection that might be fatal if it is able to spread into his blood

  • Tight end Daniel Fells, 32, was placed on injured reserve with an infection
  • Ankle injury was troubling him for weeks and caused him to miss games
  • His wife took him to emergency room and doctors found he had MRSA
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) got him placed in ICU
  • Dangerous staph infection is resistant to antibiotics and his doctors are worried it may have gotten into his bone and could travel into his blood
  • The undrafted player has 12 career touchdowns but might be done in NFL

New York Giants player Daniel Fells is in danger of losing his foot - nearly a week after he was placed on injured reserve with a staph infection.

The Giants announced their plans to place Fells on IR last Monday because of an ankle injury that had been troubling him for weeks and caused him to miss last Sunday's win over the Buffalo Bills.

In evaluating the injury, it was discovered he had a staph infection which required treatment.

But it wasn't until his wife took him to the emergency room this week with a 104-degree temperature that doctors discovered he had contracted the potentially fatal bug MRSA.

Fells (pictured in a game against the Tennessee Titans last December) was initially diagnosed with an ankle problem along with a temperature

It wasn't until Fells' wife (pictured with him earlier this year) took him to the emergency room that doctors discovered he had MRSA

The team placed him on injured reserve with the infection on Monday and has been in the ICU since Friday. Here he is pictured scoring a touchdown in September last year

The Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection landed Fells in the hospital and he has been in the Intensive Care Unit since Friday, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.

Fells, pictured at a party in January this year, had a 104-degree temperature while at the ER

Fells has already had five surgeries and he will likely have more operations as doctors attempt to stop the aggressive infection, though there is already a concern it has entered into his ankle bone.

The big fear is the MRSA could spread from Fells' bone and make its way into his bloodstream, which could be fatal.

Fells, an undrafted free agent who is known for his blocking prowess, has 12 touchdowns during his career.

There is a very real chance that the fallout from the infection, which caused Fells to have a 104-degree temperature when he was in the ER, could end his seven-year career in the NFL.

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said 'This is a serious situation that has been taken seriously from the beginning.

'We're all fighting for Daniel.'

Doctors do not know how Fells contracted the infection and New York's players were warned about the danger after the team's facility was disinfected, CBS News reported.

Team officials, including general manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin, took the time to visit Fells in advance of the team's game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

Coach Coughlin said: 'With Daniel, it was a different story, there was no surface injury that anybody knows of.

'It was an acute joint [ankle] problem along with a temperature.'

Star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, 22, added: 'Everybody is sweaty, dirty, and things can get passed around through scabs and scars or whatever.

'They said something about Ebola a long time ago, and I try not to worry about that.'

This is not the first time the Giants have been forced to worry about a player losing an appendage.

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul lost most of his index finger and portions of the thumb and middle finger on his right hand were severely damaged during a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July.

The team is optimistic that Pierre-Paul will play again, but he has yet to join the club this season.

The Giants head into their matchup with the 49ers on Sunday Night Football with a record of 2-2.
