They seized the 19th Century fort -once known as Fort Colomb - in October 1939. Three trucks carrying 25 people left the hospital every day and took them to primitive gas chambers (top right) which had formerly been used as an artillery depot. Once the men had been killed, the SS began taken the female patients and eventually the children. By November, all the patients were dead. The Nazis also used mobile gas chambers (bottom right) in specially adapted vans to kill patients from other hospitals in the area. By mid-1940, more than 5,000 patients and hundreds of Poles had been gassed to death at the camp.

Cook Medical in a statement said that its vice president of engineering, William S. Gibbons Jr., and his daughter Abbey were killed when the plane crashed into Buffalo Mountain, The (Bloomington) Herald Times reported. The girl was a sophomore at Bloomington High School South.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters says the plane was heading to Bloomington from Knoxville, Tenn., when it crashed Friday night on the mountain located southwest of Johnson City.

The paper reports that the National Transportation Safety Board inspector told the Johnson City Press in Tennessee that it would take six months to a year to determine why the plane crashed.

A Tennessee dad was killed while saving his 10-year-old daughter from an oncoming train as they collected rocks along the tracks, his family said.

Justin McCary's heartbroken family, speaking to WRCB-TV, said the 31-year-old heroically made the ultimate sacrifice when his daughter's foot became stuck.

The East Ridge dad heard the train coming while walking with his daughter and niece Thursday afternoon, they said.

After safely getting out of its way, however, he looked back to see his daughter trapped on the tracks along a bridge.
