It has been the launch pad of some of music's biggest names, but this superstar decided to hit reverse on his career just for one day.

Kanye West left Jennifer Lopez struggling to regain her composure after surprising her and her fellow judges by auditioning for American Idol.

The 38-year-old rapper decided he would try his hand at starting from the bottom in San Francisco, California, on Saturday.

Wife Kim Kardashian captured the moment Kanye walked around the corner to perform for JLo, Harry Connick, Jr. and Keith Urban.

Kim posted a snap of the producer's monitor and it was clear Jennifer could barely believe her eyes when Kanye appeared singing an a capella version of his hit Gold Digger - including the line that name checks JLo.

Host Ryan Seacrest also shared a behind-the-scenes moment on Instagram showing an uncharacteristically smiley Bound 2 star excited after being sen through to the next round.

Proudly holding up his 'golden ticket' to Hollywood's final round to show Kim, Kanye looked as though he was like any other contestant that makes it through.

Ryan was also very excited for the rapper, jumping in the air to celebrate.

Kanye and his wife were certainly packing a lot in the less than 24 hours they spent in San Francisco.

After his big audition, Kanye had an even bigger performance to attend - going from wowing the American Idol judges to impressing the American President himself.

Whether Kanye's presidential bid is serious still is yet to be confirmed, however, he certainly seems to be pretty serious about winning the favour of the current President.
