NEW Last month saw like-for-like retail sales increase by 2.6 per cent, marking the fastest growth since January 2014, new findings reveal. With spending up thanks to back-to-school sales and the Rugby World Cup, year-on-year total sales made by people across the country have risen by 3.9 per cent, the British Retail Consortium/KPMG Sales Monitor said. Despite this positive outlook, the report said the inclusion of the August Bank Holiday into September's data distorts the findings, with boosted fashion, furniture and back-to-school sales.

MONEY NEWS & ADVICE
I find I'm watching more TV shows on Netflix and 'on-demand': Do I still need to pay £145.50 for a TV licence?
I work quite long hours and find the amount of time I watch television has dwindled. It means I rarely sit around watching 'filler' shows or anything live. I pay £6.99 for Netflix each month and find with my limited time, it has enough shows to keep me occupied when I need a TV fix. I also watch on-demand shows. Do I need a licence?
Alarm sounds over pensions as number of whistleblowing reports about auto-enrolment soar
The number of whistleblowing reports made to the pensions regulator about auto-enrolment has jumped 33 per cent in a year. Auto-enrolment - the new law which means every employer must automatically enrol staff into a pension - is entering a critical stage, with 97 per cent of UK employers yet to reach their compliance dates.
You book a holiday based on a flattering write-up... but can you trust it? Secrets of the online review sites unmasked
Around £23billion of consumer spending a year, on everything from travel to electronics, is triggered after people read favourable online reviews. But these reviews cannot always be trusted. Here, The Mail on Sunday looks at how online shoppers are being manipulated. The Sykeses paid £430 to advertise their holiday cottage.
What still puzzles you about the pensions revolution? Savers' top 10 queries revealed - as well as the answers...
Now six months since new pension reforms were first introduced, savers, employers and pension providers alike are still experiencing teething problems, with some of the detail still being ironed out. We reveal the top ten questions that savers have been posing to the government's official pension service Pension Wise. Do you know the answers?
Stocks, shops or even a home: How to bag a bargain in the US
The UK's special relationship with America runs deeper than just a political understanding. Britons like to buy American branded goods; invest in the shares of their most successful companies; and even own property there. The Mail on Sunday shows you how to shop, invest and live in the US. Slavica Vojinovic uses shipping firm MyUS to buy archery gear for her business.
'I'm still grateful the neighbours helped me when we had no food': Singer Oritsé Williams may have a £2.7m home, but knows value of money
Pop star Oritsé Williams was so poor when growing up that his family could not afford to pay for food and electricity and would rely on handouts from neighbours. Now, Williams lives in a £2.7million mansion and goes on luxury holidays to St Lucia. As part of boy band JLS, he was able to command £70,000 - shared between them - for a private performance that lasted just one hour.
JEFF PRESTRIDGE: Treasury should rethink plans for 8% bank surcharge and allow challengers to flourish
No government likes to do U-turns - and this one is in no mood to compromise as evidenced by its refusal to tamper with the impending cuts to tax credits. But at the very least, Osborne should review his decision to introduce the 8 per cent bank surcharge. Does he really want to stifle the competitive forces that financial services and customers are crying out for?
SIMON WATKINS: Need a number? Phone a friend instead of dialling 118 118 and its 90% profit margin
The only people who use it are those who are excluded or alienated from the digital age - the poor and the elderly. For the operators of 118 118 these consumers are fish in a barrel. The profits from the service are by any measure extraordinary. The profit margin for this company is almost 90 per cent. Even a pre-crash banker would goggle at such a margin.
May the force be with you: How to turn modern stamps into investments as new Star Wars heralds Darth Vader special issue
Star Wars blazes back on to cinema screens this December with The Force Awakens. To mark the occasion, Royal Mail will be issuing a set of Darth Vader stamps. A dozen 63p Star Wars First Class stamps - featuring characters such as Princess Leia and the Dark Lord himself - will go on sale in nine days' time. But despite their huge collectable appeal, modern stamp issues usually fall in value after release as so many get printed.
MIDAS SHARE TIPS: Looking for a high yield? Hitch up to the black horse bank
So now we know. The Government is planning to sell at least £2billion worth of shares in Lloyds Banking Group to individual investors next March. This begs one obvious question: is the stock a good buy? To make the question easier to answer, the Government is offering two incentives. First, the shares will be sold at a 5 per cent discount to the prevailing market price and second, anyone who keeps the stock for more than a year will receive one free share for every ten held.

Birkenhead-based Cammell Laird will start work on the icebreaker next year, having beaten off competition from around the world to become the Government's 'preferred bidder'. The ship, which will carry helicopters and be able to dispatch submarines under the ice, will launch in 2019 and operate in both Antarctica and the Arctic.
US funds sue Tesco over its profits scandal as grocery giant's earnings collapse
A group of four American pension and investment funds have launched a multi-million dollar legal action against Tesco over its 'massive restatement' of profits that caused a collapse in its share price last year. The claim centres on Tesco's £263million accounting scandal in September 2014, which emerged after a member of staff brought the issue to the attention of incoming chief executive Dave Lewis.

'People are afraid to be ambitious and we want to change that': Entrepreneur First aims to become the biggest producer of start-ups in Europe
Clifford and Alice Bentick met on their first day at McKinsey Consulting. They went on to set up Entrepreneur First, the pre-seed investment programme which - unusually - selects people before they have a start-up or even an idea. Clifford may like to joke that it is a 'six month programme in megalomania', but he is extremely serious about the concept.
YOUR MONEY ESSENTIALS
MINOR INVESTOR: If you're going to indulge in a spot of reckless investing, a mass sale like Lloyds is probably the best excuse (but here's how the shares stack up)
'Dear Investors, we plan to sell you a stake you already collectively own in a bank you rescued...' is not how the Lloyds share sale offer page starts. Yet, it seems that many will still be taking up the offer, however cynical they are. Their reasons may amount to bad investing theory, but like them I'm tempted.
The Investing Show: Reasons to be cheerful and should you buy Lloyds shares?
As the Lloyds share sale sweeteners that could get you £200 back on a £1,000 invested are revealed, we take a look at the bank - along with a fund manager's view that the UK will do well.
