Is Victoria Beckham cloning Queen Rania? After the fashion designer hailed Jordan's monarch 'inspiring', we reveal how the pair have a LOT more in common than meets the eye

  • Pair met on Day 1 of the Social Good Summit in New York City
  • Victoria is carving out a name for herself as charity ambassador
  • Queen Rania has used her position to raise awareness
  • Duo have similar dress senses and are both mothers of four

One is fashion royalty and the other is real royalty, and whilst Victoria Beckham and Queen Rania of Jordan seem far from similar, the pair have a lot more in common than meets the eye.

Last fortnight, the pair met on Day 1 of the Social Good Summit in New York City - and it seems that Victoria took a liking to the royal.

The 41-year-old - who is a UN International Goodwill Ambassador - caught up with 45-year-old Queen Rania of Jordan and later tweeted a snap of the pair chatting, hailing the monarch a 'beautiful, inspiring mother.'

HUMANITARIANISM

One of the most influential women in the Arab World, Queen Rania of Jordan exudes a glamour that sees her regularly featured on magazines and websites across the globe.

The Queen, who is married to Abdullah II ibn al-Hussein, the King of Jordan, has four children but enjoys an independent profile that sees her jetting around the world to high profile events.

The 45-year-old royal has used her position to raise awareness on a variety of subjects close to her heart, including education, health and cross-cultural dialogue.

She is famed for her commitment to progressive social and economic agenda - as well as her supermodel looks.

But this is one royal whose life is all business, with Rania using her position to launch a child abuse counselling centre in Jordanian capital Amman, all while pushing for educational reform.

She also set up her own NGO, The Jordan River Foundation (JRF), which gives a helping hand to the disadvantaged in Jordan and aims to provide them with the skills and knowledge to work themselves out of poverty.

Abroad, Queen Rania works for greater global action on access to good education, and in her capacity as Eminent Advocate for UNICEF and Honorary Chairperson for UNGEI, she campaigns on behalf of children in need.

She also participates in international gatherings, such as the Clinton Global Initiative and the World Economic Forum, of which she is a board member.

Her website bio reads: 'As an Arab, Muslim woman, Queen Rania is committed to reconciling people of different faiths and cultures by encouraging cross-cultural dialogue, particularly amongst young people.'

Victoria Beckham may have found fame as one fifth of the 90s most successful girl band, but she's fast overhauled her image - and is quickly forging a similar path to Queen Rania's.

As well as making a very successful foray into fashion, Victoria has been using her status for the better in recent years with a spot of humanitarianism.

In February last year, following an invitation from Vogue editor Anna Wintour and American Vogue to visit South Africa, Victoria met mothers2mothers (m2m) founder, Dr. Mitch Besser.

The charity trains, employs and empowers Mentor Mothers, who are mothers living with HIV, in order to educate them on how to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to babies and improve the health of women and their families.

Victoria was so moved by the experience that she wanted to do all she could to raise money and awareness.

Speaking about the cause at the time, she said: ‘After spending just a few days with these remarkable women and learning more about the charity from Mitch, and his lovely wife Annie Lennox, I wanted to do as much as I could. It really was a life-changing experience; I’ve never experienced anything like it.’

Victoria felt that a sale of items from her wardrobe could be an incredibly powerful way to raise both money and awareness.

At the time, she told Grazia magazine: 'I have never met such strong women in my entire life. The work they are doing is nothing short of absolutely remarkable.'

With help from her mother and sister, Victoria carefully selected iconic pieces from her wardrobe - pieces from her early days with the Spice Girls, that she wore out with David Beckham, and from catwalk appearances, parties, awards shows and other events that have been heavily documented and photographed by the world’s press.

She partnered with theoutnet.com to sell hundreds of her items of her clothing in aid of the charity, mothers2mothers and raised global awareness for a brilliant cause.

Then, taking her campaign further, the famously shy Victoria was made a UN goodwill ambassador for an AIDS charity in September.

The former Spice Girl told a press conference at the United Nations building in New York that she was ‘honoured’ to be made an ambassador for their UNAIDS campaign.

Beckham – who missed the opening of her London store to be there – said she felt her public profile meant she had a duty to do more about woman’s health.

And she was inspired following a recent trip to South Africa, where she met with children struck by the deadly disease.

The fashion designer visited Cape Town in February as part of the Born Free initiative, which tackles the issue of HIV being transmitted from mothers to their children.

At the press conference in New York, she said: ‘I am mother and I am a woman.

'I will do whatever I can to raise awareness. I feel very passionate about this. I recently visited South Africa and was so touched by the women I met and felt inspired. I came home and I knew I had to do something.

'It's taken me to get to 40 to realise I have a responsibility as a woman and as a mother.

'For some reason people will listen to me. This is the beginning of an incredible journey for me.

'I have people mentoring me. I am going back to South Africa in a few weeks and then further afield next year.

'I would do anything for my children and I think every woman has the right to health and every woman has the right to give their children a healthy future.

‘[Sir] Elton [John] is a very dear friend of mine and David’s and we’ve been patrons of the Elton John Aids Foundation for 20 years so I have been working a lot with lots of Aids charities.

'It’s why I realise I have to step forward and do whatever I can do. I want to get to know the women and understand them. It was life changing when I want to South Africa. '

It was her fight against AIDs that drew her the Social Good Summit in New York, where she met with Rania. At the event she said: ‘Let's support, educate and empower women everywhere to be able to achieve this for our children,’ Victoria, a UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador, told the summit. ‘Please tell everyone.'

Victoria's campaign shows no sign of abating. On Friday, Victoria personally paid a philanthropic visit to communities in Ethiopia and provided a jewellery-making class to men and women in order of AIDS prevention care and education.

Sharing images of her compelling trip, she captioned the first image - which saw her stood next to a table of mature students - with: 'Great day...Thank you for this incredible opportunity.'

In the second shot she wrote: 'Fair trade jewellery. Teaching women a trade', while a third picture saw her simply say: 'Restoring, creating, empowering. Women supporting women.'

STYLE

Victoria has successfully made the stylish leap from glitzy WAG with a penchant for bling and bright colours to an acclaimed fashion designer with a love of minimalist tailoring.

The 41-year-old, who has cemented her status as one of the world's most esteemed designers, sure knows what works for her and has long been known to stick to a precise uniform of pared back looks, including the classic silhouetted LBD, chic navy blazer and cigarette pants.

But, as she finds her confidence as a designer, Victoria has been pushing the style boundaries - and it's certainly paying off.

The fashion darling has been stepping out in bolder colours, new shapes and embracing prints - and she's never looked better.

Indeed, the mother-of-four is a walking advert for her new designs, which showcase a shift in her style.

Her signature dress silhouettes, which have made her a favourite among Blake Lively and Eva Longoria, still feature strongly but there's bolder colours, as well as floral and heart prints emblazoned on dresses in her new wardrobe.

Victoria, who started her own fashion label in 2008, has previously spoken out about her desire to create dresses which make women feel empowered and good about themselves.

Victoria once revealed in an interview: 'A great dress makes a woman feel special and should be easy to wear. To be able to put on a perfect dress and know that it is flattering from every angle is really important to me.'

Explaining that it is important that she can wear the designs herself, she said: 'Essentially I design what I want to wear and what I feel is right for the moment. Women want to feel good in clothes, but also a little sexy and feminine.'

Whilst Victoria took the crown of Britain's best dressed star in a recent poll, Queen Rania of Jordan has quietly been carving out a seriously enviable style of her own.

The Kuwait-born mother-of-four regularly makes the top ten on global best dressed lists and was recently voted the most elegant royal in the world, thanks to her embrace of chic shift dresses and seriously glittery earrings.

Much like Victoria, who has a very strategic wardrobe of tailored separates and chic dresses in neutral hues, Queen Rania loves more pared-back looks.

She does, however, often wear a bold skirt or dress - something Mrs Beckham surprises us with on occasions.

Whilst Rania is keen to represent Middle Eastern fashion by championing homegrown designers, such as Elie Saab, Krikor Jabotian and Aennis Eunis, she's a huge fan of YSL, Miu Miu and even Victoria Beckham.

Whether she's stunning in traditional dresses or dazzling in haute couture gowns, Rania has adopted a regal style befitting on a modern royal - and like Mrs B, never has an off day.

FAMILY FIRST

When she's not jetting around the world on behalf of her charities, Queen Rania of Jordan has a surprisingly normal life, which she duly documents on her Instagram page.

While some of the photos - like one of her with Barack Obama at Nelson Mandela's memorial - hint at a privileged life, many show that she is simply a mother who loves her family: Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, Princess Salma, and Prince Hashem.

Indeed, a description on her Instagram page explains that she thinks of herself as 'a mum and a wife with a really cool day job.'

In one photo, the Kuwait-born mother-of-four sits on a sofa with her youngest daughter Salma, 13, who is playing a guitar.

The Queen - who looks casually elegant in a grey blazer - captioned the photo: 'Relaxing to her tunes after a long day at work.'

In another image, she and her family appear understated and unassuming as they dine out at what looks to be a local restaurant in Jordan.

'Out with the #family for #lunch, nothing like grills and a good plate of humus,' she wrote on the image.

Likewise, Victoria is a mother of four and is fiercely protective of sons Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 13, and Cruz, 10, as well as four-year-old daughter Harper with her husband David Beckham.

Whilst they do attend A-list events, such as the London in LA Burberry event, together, the Beckhams love nothing more than chilling out together.

Indeed, the clan often attend SoulCycle classes in Los Angeles or kick a ball around in the garden at home.

In an interview with Australian Vogue in 2013, she insisted: 'Really, we’re much more normal than people think.'
