Candace Bushnell, 56, creator of Sex And The City, answers our health quiz.

CAN YOU RUN UP THE STAIRS?

Yes, but it's something I never thought about until I crossed the threshold of 50. Then all of a sudden it's like - aah, I can barely make it up the stairs! I really set out to improve my fitness in the past three or four years. I try to do something every day - walk or cycle and do a 20-minute stretching routine. My feeling is that it's better to do a little something than nothing. One sit-up is better than no sit-up.

GET YOUR FIVE A DAY?

Never. It's usually three at most. I often cook for myself and I'll always have one green vegetable such as Brussels sprouts or cauliflower and a salad. I read somewhere that cruciferous vegetables absorb fat. My favourite food is something like a lamb chop or roast chicken. I just love charcuterie.

EVER DIETED?

I dieted a lot in my 20s. But dieting doesn't work. When you say to yourself I'm dieting and I can't eat this, all you want to do is eat that. I'm a little-bit-of-everything kind of person.

IS SEX IMPORTANT?

Of course - it's another form of communication.

ANY VICES?

Two glasses of wine a day. Two is the right amount for me. I like white wine. I think I'm allergic to red wine: if I drink even half a glass of red wine, I feel awful the next day.

POP ANY PILLS?

I was really into the fish oils for about five years but I started getting stomach aches. I worked out it was the fish oils when I ran out a couple of times and each time I felt better. I tried a red wine pill (resveratrol) supplement that made me feel like I had the worst hangover!

WORST ILLNESS OR INJURY?

About three years ago I was riding a horse when it started bucking. I flew about 20 ft, ended up on my butt and cracked my pelvis. At first, I thought I was OK and drove myself home. But soon I could barely walk. I was in so much agony I called for an ambulance. Luckily I'd just cracked a bone.

EVER HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY?

I FEEL like I should do it - I have too many friends who've had plastic surgery. Some of them you can't tell and others you think - oh my God, something went wrong! I'm sure I'm going to have, like, a lower jaw lift or something like that at some point. That said, ageing is one of the things that happens in life. Now, if I don't wear make-up, I don't care. I'm not trying to attract a man to have a child with. There's something very freeing about that.

EVER BEEN DEPRESSED?

Yes. As a writer there's always a certain amount of depression and self-doubt. I find doing something physical, like going for a walk, helps to change my mindset. I get worried about everything. I used to do things much more off the cuff, but as I've got older I've realised that having a routine, while dull, really helps with the stress levels. So I now try to plan things more.

BIGGEST PHOBIA?

Heights. If I go on a bridge, I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack. I have nightmares about bridges.

LIKE TO LIVE FOR EVER?

No. We all need to make room for other people.

Candace Bushnell's new book, Killing Monica, is published by Little, Brown, £14.99.
