Grantchester's second series is now firmly on the horizon.

And show leads Robson Green, 50, and James Norton, 29, took time out of their working day to wave to fans as they filmed scenes from the ITV period drama in Cambridge on Monday.

The handsome duo, who play Detective Inspector Geordie Keating and Reverend Sidney Chambers respectively, were enjoying a coffee on the picturesque Clare College Bridge at the time.

However, the friendly actors cut their chat short as they waved to the people punting on the river Cam beneath.

Green was kitted out in his usual Colombo-style work wear while his younger co-star Norton cut a handsome figure in a crisp white shirt which he wore unbuttoned at the collar beneath a grey suit jacket.

The small screen adaptation, which is based on The Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcie, attracted a series average of 6.6 million viewers when it debuted in October 2014.

In the final episode of the last series, Geordie was shot on duty. A year on, he appears to have put this behind him. But underneath his carefree exterior there are new feelings of vulnerability, and this puts a strain on his relationship with Cathy, and his friendship with Sidney.

Sidney is still single and Geordie makes it his mission to find him a woman. But the handsome vicar clearly still only has eyes for Amanda – whom we last saw when she was about to marry Sidney’s rival Guy.

The six new episodes will be filmed in London and Grantchester as well as Cambridge's city centre.

And ITV's Director of Drama Steve November has said the second series is 'deeper and darker' than the first.

'The new series promises six new episodes filed with mystery, intrigue and character driven plots, with lots of twists and turns. Whist the drama is set in a beautiful, picturesque village, we’ll be delving deeper and darker than before.'

The new series was initially set to air in late 2015 but the new episodes have now been pushed back to 2016.

On Monday evening James Norton starred as impotent Sir Clifford Chatterley in the hotly-anticipated BBC One re-make of Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

The much talked about one-off was the latest screen adaptation of DH Lawrence’s novel, first published privately in 1928, about an aristocratic woman’s affair with a working-class gamekeeper.

Until 1960, the book was banned from being published in full in the UK, on the grounds of its explicit descriptions of sex and its use of then-unprintable words.
