It's come full circle! Californian '1980s throwback' mansion, complete with rotating dining room, sells for $5.5m - a third of the original asking price

  • Sprawling fortress-like estate in Escondido was listed originally for $16.5million in 2012 but sold just before auction this month for $5.5million
  • The home, perched on top of Paint Mountain, has been described as the 'ultimate in throwback excess', featuring a rotating dining room and one of the world's longest residential pools
  • It also has a fitness center, sauna, wine cellar, private jogging path, 20-car garage and a custom rock water slide sloping down the edge of the mountain to a plunge pool
  • Despite looking like it comes from the 1980s, it was actually made to order in 1996 for the original owner, who had materials and craftsmen imported from all over the world

A California mansion described as the 'ultimate in throwback excess' - featuring a rotating dining room along with one of the world's longest residential pools - has sold for $5.5 million.

The sprawling 23,000-square-foot, mountaintop estate is perched on top of Paint Mountain in San Diego County and was originally listed for $16.5million in 2012.

But the new owner has bought it for a mere $5.5million after making a last-minute offer before the auction, in which the reserve price was $5million.

The seller bought it for $2million in 2000.

Whoever has just purchased the property - said to be the largest residence in all of North San Diego and Southwest Riverside counties - will have to spend quite a bit on pool maintenance though.

The 288,000-gallon creation starts in a central courtyard, around which the huge fortress-like mansion is constructed, then flows out to the garden, before plummeting down a 30ft stone water slide down the side of the mountain and into a plunge pool.

The mansion has a 288,000-gallon lap pool, which runs through the estate's courtyard and towards the back lawn

The property, which sits on 18 acres, has been built to take advantage of the stunning scenery all the way from Mexico to Dana Point in Orange County.

In fact residents don't even have to leave the dining room table to get a 360-degree view of the gorgeous surrounds - as the dining room floor revolves full circle. But if that makes you feel a bit dizzy, there are jaw-dropping coastline views from every single room.

Trulia describes it as the 'ultimate in throwback excess' - that wouldn't look out of place in 1980s TV series such as Miami Vice and Dynasty.

However the property was actually custom-built in 1995 and 1996 for its original owner, who had materials and craftsmen flown in from around the world.

Rumor has it that the kitchen was designed by designed by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, with Viking and Wolf appliances and a Teppanyaki station.

The property also boasts seven en suite bedrooms as well as a multi-room 'master suite' with oversized walk-in closets, a sauna and a soaking tub with a built-in fireplace.

There is also a game/media room, movie theater, gym, private jogging path, executive office, wine cellar and garage parking for more than 20 cars. And don't forget the koi pools, stone wall waterfallsand two 900-gallon salt-water aquariums. For those who like DIY, there is even an unfinished guest house waiting to be completed.
