Guy Pearce has confirmed he has split from his wife Kate after 18 years of marriage.

The actor revealed that the pair decided to part ways in January this year, more than 30 years after their first meeting.

Paying tribute to the psychologist, 48-year-old Pearce said: 'Kate and I will always love and support one another and be the best of friends.'

'No-one knows me like Kate does, and we’ll forever be appreciative of our mutual respect. We’ve both grown enormously through our relationship, but sadly, the time has come to part ways,' he continued.

A spokesman for the pair confirmed they decided to part ways 'amicably' in January this year, with the Iron Man actor reiterating the news on Twitter.

'Rumours r true I'm afraid - Kate and I parted ways back in Jan, (sic)' he wrote, adding: Sorry 2 be boring but we couldn't be closer. We'll love each other 4 ever xx.'

On Tuesday he shared a photograph of his wife sporting colourful tattoos, gushing: 'Best 20+ years of my life with this beautiful lady.'

Guy and Kate married in 1997, 17 years after meeting at Geelong College. The pair do not have any children, with the actor joking in the past that he is too temperamental to become a father.

'I don't even need them. There are enough babies in the world. Besides, I don't think I would be good for babies,' he told The Guardian in 2007.

'I'd be on and off. I think they need more consistent affection than I would be able to give.' Speaking of their meeting, when they were just 12, Guy previously said of his wife: 'I adored her.'

In a 2014 interview with The Saturday Paper, he revealed the pair went 10 years without seeing one another before beginning their romance.

Crediting his wife with keeping him grounded, he joked that the length of their marriage was a source of entertainment for others in Hollywood.

'People in Hollywood go, "So how long have you two been married?" and we go, "Seventeen years" and it’s like, "Oh … my … God! Really!"’ and I’m like, "Yeah", and they’re like, "Wow!"

'They find it astounding. Four years seems to be the Hollywood marriage.'

It comes just a week after Guy celebrated his 48th birthday and as the actor launches his musical career after spending 'years recording and writing'.
