But less than two weeks later, the video caught the attention of a couple from the area who arrived at the shelter to adopt Rush.

Nora Vondrell, the shelter’s executive director, told ABC News: ‘The family had seen the video, came and met Rush and fell in love.’

She added: ‘Day after day, the staff would watch Rush make his bed and one day, one of our marketing interns got it on video.

‘We put it on social media to encourage people to come in and adopt the animal.’

And Rush’s new family believe it was fate that brought them together.

In a clip on the shelter’s YouTube channel, they explain how they had lost their dogs earlier in the year and were not yet ready for a new pet.

But they stumbled across Rush on the news and on an animal rescue site.

And while on the way to visit the shelter, they saw a sign that read ‘Rush to be there’ - but the middle two words appeared tiny, so they read it as simply: ‘Rush there’.

‘It was a sign on a sign,’ the woman said. ‘He’s our puppy, that’s for sure.’
