Jeff Daniels gets into his Newsroom and Dumb And Dumber characters for funny skit on James Corden's Late Late Show

Jeff Daniels showed off his acting range on Tuesday night when he reprised both his sharpest and dullest characters - at the same time.

In a skit on The Late Late Show With James Corden, the 60-year-old turned the tables and interviewed the host as his Newsroom character, Will McAvoy.

But Corden was only seconds into answering his opening question when he received a smack on the head from a boom mic.

'Oh I'm sorry boss, it's just really heavy,' the struggling intern apologises, who turns out to be Dumb And Dumber's Harry Dunne - also played by Daniels.

As McAvoy presses ahead with serious questions about diversity in late night television, another piece of audio visual equipment sneaks into shot, but this time it's a selfie stick.

'I can't hold a boom and a selfie stick,' Dunne answers the quizzical looks.

'Why do you have a selfie stick?' Daniels asks himself. 'I don't understand the question,' comes the reply.

Turning to his notes on Corden, McAvoy presses ahead: 'It says here you were born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, you're 48 and you have two kids..... who compiled this research?'

Dunne owns up and insists the details are correct... for Andy Richter, Conan O'Brien's portly announcer.

'This is James Corden,' McAvoy growls, losing patience. 'Really? Wow. Looks exactly like Andy Richter,' Dunne shrugs, unperturbed.

When Corden takes a sip from his mug and gains a black ring around his mouth, McAvoy finally loses it with Harry, who's clutching a marker and guffawing.

'You know what? You are what’s wrong with television today,' he shouts. 'It used to be that you had to be skilled, hard-working to make it in TV, but not anymore. There are two things in this world that give me an ulcer: Indian food and people like you.

'Television used to teach, used to inspire, but now it’s just a competition between who’s dumb and who’s dumber,' he said, to audience groans.

As the sentimental music fades in, the news anchor begins to tear-up as he delivers his heartfelt speech.

'But TV can be great again, with strong voices who don’t need to shout to be hard,' he continued. 'We can make it great again. That is our duty.'

But his sincere moment is cut short by a laughing Dunne. 'You said doody.'

'How can you possibly be so immature?' McAvoy asks... before Corden breaks into fits of giggles too.
