New mother Hayden Panettiere checks into treatment facility amid battle with postpartum depression

New mother Hayden Panettiere is seeking help for postpartum depression in a treatment facility.

The Nashville star and her 39-year-old champion boxer fiancé Wladimir Klitschko welcomed a baby daughter, Kaya, in December.

A spokesperson for the actress released a statement on Tuesday, telling Us Weekly: 'Hayden Panettiere is voluntarily seeking professional help at a treatment center as she is currently battling postpartum depression.

'She asks that the media respect her privacy during this time.'

Hayden only recently revealed she suffered from PPD following her daughter's birth.

She filled out a questionnaire for Us Weekly where she disclosed the condition while also offering solidarity and support to fellow sufferers.

Hayden wrote: 'I suffered a bit of postpartum depression. You're not alone or crazy, ladies!'

In a coincidence, Hayden's Nashville character Juliette Barnes is also battling PPD onscreen.

Hayden said she 'related' to her character when she appeared on Live! With Kelly and Michael last month.

'It's something a lot of women experience,' she said. 'When [you are told] about postpartum depression, you think it's "I feel negative feelings towards my child; I want to injure or hurt my child."'

But, she explained: 'I've never, ever had those feelings. Some women do, but you don't realize how broad of a spectrum you can really experience that on'

And she said: 'It's something that needs to be talked about. Women need to know that they're not alone, and that it does heal.'

Hayden had seemed to be overcoming her illness in recent weeks, taking to Twitter at the weekend to share snaps of herself enjoying the sunset.

'Feeling like I'm #finally coming back in to my own body!' she wrote. 'Mother #daughter #blessing #wellworthit.'

Her post seemed to refer to her slimmed down body, after she divulged in her Us Weekly interview that she gained 43 pounds while pregnant.

'I was 110 pounds before pregnancy and 153 pounds by the time I gave birth!', the petite actress explained.

The actress is certainly not alone in her battle with postpartum depression, which according to the American Psychological Association strikes an estimated 9 to 16 per cent of new mothers.

Celebrities who have described their battle with the condition include Oscar winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Gwyneth has described the time after the birth of her son Moses in 2006 as ‘one of the darkest and most painfully debilitating’ times of her life.

Like ordinary depression, PPD is treated through a combination of counselling and drugs.

Hayden confirmed in October 2013 that she and Wladimir were engaged, before announcing her pregnancy the following year.

She has spoken of the support he has given her since their child was born.

Wladimir is the reigning heavyweight champion of the world and is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.
