Huma really is political royalty! Hillary Clinton's right-hand woman wears same British designer dress as Kate Middleton to watch her boss in crucial Democratic debate

  • Huma Abedin was spotted in a $381 dress by UK label LK Bennett
  • Brand is a favorite with the Duchess of Cambridge and Michelle Obama
  • Kate, 33, wore a blue version of the dress for visit to Brisbane last April

She's no stranger to controversy but Hillary Clinton's aide Huma Abedin today risked sparking a sartorial row after choosing a dress by a British designer for the Democratic debate.

Arriving for the event in Las Vegas, Abedin, 39, was seen wearing an L.K Bennett Lasa poppy dress - a style identical to the one worn by the Duchess of Cambridge during last year's Australian tour.

The label, which is headquartered in London, is a perennial favorite with the 33-year-old royal who has worn it repeatedly since marrying Prince William in April 2011.

Kate, who recently resumed public appearances after taking the summer off following the birth of Princess Charlotte, opted for a blue version of the $381 dress for a trip to a Royal Australian Air Force base in Brisbane last April.

Stand out in a classic floral print sheath dress like Huma

L.K. Bennet offers sensible separates and modest frocks that have attracted a fan base that includes the First Lady and the Duchess of Cambridge.

And now it seems that Huma Abedin, aide to Hillary Clinton, has also taken a liking to the British brand. The wife of former NY congressman, Andrew Weiner, wore a pink and white dress by the trendy label to the Democratic debate in Las Vegas.

The knee length sheath comes in a figure flattering slim silhouette with a beautiful floral print that pops against the white background. Huma teamed hers with classic black pumps for a look that was both professional and stylish.

Sadly, this exact dress is sold out in the States. But it is available in black with a click to the right.

Or shop below for lookalike styles from Kay Unger to Pendleton including a spitting image from Adrianna Papell. Pair with some nude strappy sandals and you'll be more than ready for the warmer weather next Spring.

Since then, the dress has sold out several times and has been reissued in a number of different color-ways, including the pink version chosen by Abedin.

Michelle Obama, who also shares a love of Alexander McQueen with the British royal, is also believed to be a fan of L.K Bennett.

Abedin, who has been married to disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner since 2010, is recently returned from London where she used a high profile dinner to try and drum up support for the Clinton campaign.

Last week, she was pictured attending a fundraising dinner at the $18m mansion in London's banker belt of Kensignton owned by socialite Rola Gordon, whose husband Grant is heir to the Glenfiddich  whisky fortune.

The previous evening, Abedin, who was without husband Weiner for the European trip, hosted a $1000-a-ticket party in Paris with American Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

But it was the London party that really raised eyebrows, with the 39-year-old taking the opportunity to hobnob with the likes of ex-banker Caroline Bonfiglio at the $1500-per-head soiree.

Abedin is now back at Clinton's side as she prepares to take on left-winger Bernie Sanders for the first time during tonight's debate.

She was spotted arriving early at the five-star Wynn Hotel in America's casino capital and was seen setting out papers on the podium belonging to her boss.

Abedin, who was left humiliated after her husband was caught sexting other women in 2011 and again in 2012 and 2013, has been a near-constant presence at Clinton's side since her bid for the Democratic nomination began.

Tonight's debate in Las Vegas comes shortly after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump admitted that he would 'love' to face Clinton in the main campaign because she is 'beatable'.

Trump went on to say that Clinton 'shouldn't even be allowed' to run for president in light of the ongoing email scandal and added:

'What she's done is very serious, and everybody else who's done it has either gone to jail' or had other problems. She shouldn't even be allowed to run.'

Nonetheless, Clinton, 67, remains confident and tonight takes her place alongside Sanders, the Vermont senator and challengers Martin O'Malley, Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee, all of them former governors.

Indeed, so confident of success is Clinton, there has even been debate over who would take on the role of First Lady should she make it to the White House.

After Clinton admitted that husband Bill would almost certainly not take on the job, sources inside her campaign revealed that the issue was being debated - with the choice narrowed down to daughter Chelsea and Abedin.

'Hillary firmly believes both Huma and Chelsea can handle the duties of the first lady with aplomb,' a source told DailyMail.com.

'But in the end she also knows it can be as big a decision to make as selecting her vice presidential running mate because the personality and image of the first lady can be a key to the success of an administration.

'Just look what Jackie Kennedy did for the Kennedy White House, or what Nancy did for the Reagan presidency. In the end Hillary knows it's a big decision, and she knows how much America loves its first ladies.'
