After moving to the US from Tijuana with her parents and 10 siblings at age 16, Alejandra had to work in order to help pay the rent.

'I worked in a fast food restaurant all day, and then I would go to my night job at a clothing store,' she shares.

But Alejandra held on to her dreams of being on television, and in 2007 she won a Latina beauty competition reality show on Univision and was subsequently offered a contract with the American Spanish language network.

The former pageant queen, who now hosts Simon Cowell's new music competition show La Banda, also shared her beauty and health tips with Daily Mail Online.

'I drink a lot of water. And I do yoga. Those are two of the most important things,' she reveals.

And although it's sometimes the last thing she feels like doing after a busy day of work, Alejandra says she always removes her make-up before going to bed.

As for her beauty regimen, the rising star prefers a 'natural look'.

'I use a face highlighter, mascara, and lip color. I also use an eyebrow pencil to make my brows look thicker. But that's all I wear when I'm not on camera,' she says.

While she prefers a more down-to-earth look, Alejandra says there's nothing wrong with people who like to wear a lot of make-up.

'You have to find what works for you - whatever makes you feel beautiful and good,' she offers.

The model goes on to say that heavily photoshopped ads work against this idea of self-acceptance and empowerment, telling Daily Mail Online: 'It's not good for the company, and it’s not good for the model.

'You need to embrace yourself – not the photoshopped version of you. That's not the way I want people to see me.'

Alejandra says that social media is a good antidote to overly-airbrushed ads, with celebrities and models being able to show fans how they look in everyday life.

'Today with Instagram, you can actually see the real person with their imperfections. I think that's a much better way to see a celebrity,' she offers.

The TV host, who has a seven-month-old son, Matteo, with her husband of four years Aníbal Marrero, also talks about life as a new mom.

'He's my biggest blessing. I’m in love,' she says of Matteo, before going to on praise her choreographer husband, whom she met while working at Univision.

'Anibal - he’s my greatest fan. I'm thankful to God for giving me so many blessings,' she shares.
