Angel Ariel Escalante Perez, 12, had been walking home school in Guatemala when he was ambushed gangland thugs who ordered him to shoot a bus driver or be killed himself. Because his father, Luis Escalante, worked as a bus driver, the brave schoolboy refused. He was then given the choice of being murdered by machetes or thrown off a bridge. Angel chose the latter and was hurled over the Incensio Bridge in Guatemala City. Despite plunging nearly 450ft, he survived after landing in the thick foliage below. He was finally found by his father three days later (left) and stretchered to hospital (top right) where he later died. His funeral is pictured bottom right.

A father has been filmed verbally abusing a female Post Office worker in Los Angeles, completely oblivious to his son's mortification, as the boy seems all too familiar with his dad's behavior. Holli Gorveatt's babies were due in January next year, but baby Link (pictured top right) was born weighing just 1lb 2oz just 23 weeks into her pregnancy earlier this month. And Gorveatt (left) remains pregnant with his brother Logan, who is not expected to be born until her 2016 due date. Doctors had expected to have both babies at the NICU (bottom right) at the Evergreen Medical Center in Kirkland, Washington. Dr Martin Walker had performed in-utero surgery to fix a complication - known as 'twin-twin transfusion syndrome' because the babies shared a placenta. Then, when Gorveatt went into labor a week later, Dr Walker was able to safely deliver Link while Logan stayed inside his mother's womb.

Patricia Morden (bottom left) reportedly received the traumatic phone call while she was preparing dinner at her Houston, Texas, home for her paramedic daughter, Melissa (right), 36, and her partner, Troy Clay II (top left), 42.
