The Fight For This Love hitmaker describer Monica as 'her biggest regret' from the previous series and seemed to be vouching for the pretty brunette this time around.

Monica stepped in front of the judges to sing a jazzy version of Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine, which showed off her impressive range to full capacity however seemed to split opinion among the tough judges.

Despite Rita observing that Monica 'wants it bad' Cheryl and Simon were divided over Monica's song choice - with Simon believing it suited her while former fan Cheryl was not sold.

The former Girls Aloud singer looked disappointed as she said to Simon: 'She shouldn't have sung that.'

Simon, who is mentoring the Overs, disagreed however, telling his fellow judge: 'It's a good song for her... She's not perfect. There's always this crack in her voice.'

Monica was clearly feeling emotional, as she said: 'I want this more than I've ever wanted it... The light at the end of the tunnel's getting brighter and brighter but that tunnel can shut at any point.'

Another hopeful to be given a second chance was pretty brunette Holly Johnson who stepped on stage to belt out a rendition of Sam Smith's hit Like I Can which was met with tepid reviews from the panel.

At the end of Sunday night's show, as the brutal judges dished out their yes and no votes, Holly was called into the room of doom and told she would be taken no further in the competition.

Clearly dejected, the stunning competitor left the room although Rita told Simon she believed they had made an error in judgement and the X Factor boss seemed to agree.

He said: 'I felt we owed you an explanation. I could see on your face you thought how could I do any more. I want to own up to the fact we made a mistake.' to which delighted Holly ran out of the room to phone home.
