Most people do their best to avoid snakes, but the legless creatures get far more attractive when they undergo designer diamond makeover.

Liv Tyler shined quite literally as she stepped out on the red carpet for the opening night of the Bvlgari & Rome: Eternal Inspiration exhibit in New York on Wednesday night.

The 38-year-old made a very expensive statement - thanks to the generosity of Italian jewellery label - wearing a diamond encrusted snake bracelet and necklace.

Both pieces wrapped around her wrist and neck respectively, with the serpent's head and tail encrusted with diamonds, its eyes created with emeralds and its scales fashioned from delicate gold pieces with smatterings of more diamonds.

Not done there, the Empire Records star's earrings were heavily bejewelled snake heads.

She also wore her own little bit of bling, her stunning diamond engagement ring from partner Dave Gardner, even the couple have yet to official confirm they are headed down the aisle.

With the jewels already making such an impression, the mother of two - Sailor, eight months, and Milo, 10 - wore an understated dress to allow the pieces to be the centre of attention.

Liv - who was hosting the night of history and jewels - wore a long sleeve black dress with a V-neck and split at the front.

Despite its neckline and split, the gown was class rather than over-the-top sexy loosely encasing the star's physique.

The event was to kick off an exhibition at the Bvlgari Fifth Avenue store which is showcasing the Roman-inspired jewellery pieces from its current collection all the way back to jewels made by the design house in the 1930s.

But diamonds are not the only precious items on display, the jewels are being showcased alongside ancient coins from the Roman Republic and marble portrait busts.
