And Kate Beckinsale showed off her regally wonderful wardrobe prowess as she stepped out among plenty of other stars at the The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences New Members Reception at the American Ambassador's Residence in London on Wednesday.

The British actress, 42, was a truly sensational addition to proceedings at the soiree, hosted by Ambassador Barzun and his wife Brooke.

Kate showed off her svelte figure in an understated yet effective black dress, showing off her toned arms and her trim waistline through smart little cut-out details on the side.

The snug pencil skirt of the black dress was decorated with a detailed shiny pattern, glowing in a shimmering pewter shade, and elevating the look from a simple LBD.

Her slender physique had never looked so good, the form-fitting design showing off every inch of every curve she's the proud owner of.

The 46-year-old donned a unique white layered dress, complete with gaping cut-outs over her shapely torso, a high neck and large bell-shaped sleeves, and a black bow to tie it together at the front.

It was certainly a tricky garment to wear - not one for the faint of fashion heart - but the slender stunner pulled it off with aplomb.

Accompanying her was co-star and fellow red carpet-walker from earlier in the day, Rooney Mara, who had kept on her premiere dress - a nude, sheer gown, that showed off her lovely legs underneath.

But inside the party, the 30-year-old actress kept her covetable, chic beige coat draped over her shoulders, clearly feeling the early British autumn chill despite being safely behind closed doors.

Actress Cressida Bonas - Prince Harry's famous ex-girlfriend - has been doing her bit on the London social scene of late, and made her appearance known on Wednesday at the Ambassador's reception.

The pretty 26-year-old opted for a pair of high-waisted black satin trousers with a tapered ankle, and a bright blue blouse with a high collar and slim tie detail.

Adding a feminine touch to her separates, her blonde hair was piled up into a sweet updo, tied up with a black ribbon.

Other famous faces at the swish bash included Jeremy Piven, legendary actor Patrick Stewart and his wife Sunny Ozell, actor James Purefoy and his wife Jessica Adams, the lovely Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Joan Collins, who was joined by husband Percy Gibson, and directors Ridley Scott and Tom Hooper.

Meanwhile, with two films in post-production, Kate looks to be taking a break before she reprises her role as vampire warrior Selene in Underworld: Next Generation.

Following on from the last installment in the franchise three years ago, the films producer and her husband Len recently revealed the film will shed yet more light on the alternative universe the films are set in.

He told IGN: 'There's kind of more of a spin-off of some of the characters like we did with Rise of the Lycans and then another film is also being developed in the works with Kate possibly as well, and then there's a television series as well.'

'It's kind of expanding that universe in many ways.'

And while the plotline of the film is not known at this point, the fifth outing of the popular horror/action franchise is set to hit cinemas in October 2016.
