William Shatner has spoken about finding out about his ex-wife Nerine Shatner's struggle with addiction.

The model was the Star Trek actor's third wife, and faced a battle with alcohol addiction before tragically drowning in the couple's swimming pool in 1999. 

In an interview with SBS2's The Feed on Thursday night the 84-year-old iconic Hollywood actor revealed he only discovered his third wife's struggles just hours after their wedding.

'Somewhere in the middle of the night she'd started drinking again and that's when I realised that my marriage which was hours old was in trouble already,' he confessed. 

The actor, who was seen arriving at Perth Domestic Airport on Wednesday in sandals, trousers and a short-sleeve shirt, is best known for playing Captain James T Kirk in the sci-fi series.

He said when he married Nerine he thought his love could overcome her struggle with drinking.

'When I married Nerine, I thought and I said that the love that I felt for her would displace whatever hole there was in her soul that the drink was filling up and she agreed,' he told the SBS 2 program.

However, the Canadian actor, director, author and singer, realised hours after the wedding party this wasn't the case.

'The wedding party, she was sober,' he said.

'At the end of the wedding party...she'd say, "I didn't drink,". She had pledged her sobriety to me.

'I said, "I know, that's the way its going to be" and the next morning she was drunk.

The couple were married for two years before the grim discovery of the model's body in their Californian home.

Since then, the Hollywood star has gone on to re-marry Elizabeth Martin in 2001 and the couple are still together.

The Boston Legal star has three children, Leslie, Lisabeth and Melanie from his first marriage to Canadian actress Gloria Rand, which ended in 1969.

He was then married for 23 years to Marcy Lafferty from 1973 to 1996, after which he began dating Nerine Kidd. 

William did the in-depth and personal interview with the news show while in Australia on tour with his his one man show and Broadway production Shatner’s World.. We Just Live In It!
