Meghan Trainor calls for the fashion industry to stop using the 'plus-size' label as she urges women to embrace their curves in full-figured fashion campaign

Meghan Trainor is pleased that more full-bodied women are being recognized in the fashion industry - but wants the term 'plus-size' to be retired once and for all.

The 21-year-old singer, who became a symbol for body confidence with the release of her hit single, All About That Bass, has just signed on as the face of online retailer FullBeauty.com's new Own Your Curves campaign.

'I've always hated the word plus-size,' Meghan shared in an interview with Elle.com about her modelling debut with the e-commerce site, which sells clothing sizes 12 and up.

Echoing Melissa McCarthy's sentiments about the term, the musician added: 'It bugs me.'

She went on to reveal: 'When I first signed up with FullBeauty... I was like: "I don't want to be labeled as this plus-sized girl coming in," and they said: "Absolutely not, we don't like that term either."'

Meghan says that women who are size 12 and up are 'a huge part of our society', adding: 'How are you going to criticize us? The word "plus-sized" should be gone.'

The star, who looks gorgeous in a black peplum dress in the campaign, further offers: 'I hate seeing when people blow up about a model because she has a little extra skin.'

She says that she has also endured her fair share of body shaming on social media, revealing: 'There are those comments that are like: "Fat whale, go away," pretty brutal stuff.

'I just try to not read [it]... and my family really helps me out whenever I'm feeling down about comments. My mom talks me out of being sad,' she adds.

Meghan went on to praise 45-year-old Melissa and Gigi Hadid, 20, for speaking out against body shaming, saying that they're their using their celebrity influence for good.

'I think it gets more people talking about it,' offers the star.

Asked how she has learned to feel confident in her body, Meghan reveals:  'Writing songs really helps. I think a big part of it is saying it out loud. I say: "I look good today," and I feel good. It really helps hearing it out loud.'

As for who in the music industry she looks up to, the chart-topper shares: 'Beyonce has curves, and she loves them. She talks about them. I've always loved that about her.'

Meghan says that while she thinks online bullying will never go away because of the prevalence of social media, she does believe that spreading the word about self-acceptance will help.'

'Spread the love, try to get more people to love each other. I think that will help,' shares the star.
