Ian Madigan was overcome with emotion at the final whistle following Ireland’s 24-9 victory against France on Sunday night – with his team-mate Rob Kearney revealing that the squad had branded him ‘Gazza’.
Former England star Paul Gascoigne famously broke down in tears during his side’s World Cup semi-final clash with West Germany in 1990 after he received a booking which would have ruled him out of the final if Bobby Robson’s outfit had managed to progress.
‘The boys were calling him Gazza inside there at breakfast,’ said Kearney on Madigan’s post-match tears.

Ireland they overcame the loss of three of their most influential players and condemned their Gallic opponents to a quarter-final date with New Zealand.
This was Ireland’s first win over France in a World Cup match and Irish Rugby acknowledged how important the win was, thanking Madigan and their supporters after the match.
Irish Rugby tweeted: ‘Thank you for the support. @Ian_madigan shows just how much it meant. #ShoulderToShoulder #IREvFRA #RWC2015’

Sexton, skipper Paul O’Connell and Peter O’Mahony all went off during the win. O’Connell’s World Cup is almost certainly over thanks to a nasty hamstring injury.
Madigan replaced Jonathan Sexton in the 25th minute of the ferocious Pool D encounter after the Ireland fly-half was forced off with a groin injury following a crunching hit from France No 8 Louis Picamoles.
The Leinster playmaker delivered an assured performance and landed eight points from the tee as Joe Schmidt’s side recorded a seismic victory in Cardiff.
‘I think it was a day where he really stood up. We needed him to come on and really take control of things and he did. It was brilliant,' added Kearney.
