He enjoyed a glittering 21-year career which saw him enjoy stints at the top teams everywhere from Los Angeles to Paris.

And David Beckham's hard work has paid off as he's earned himself quite the lucrative pension packet, stacking up over six million pounds in his first year of retirement, new figures show.

David, 40, paid himself £6.5 million in his first full year since retiring from professional football.

The windfall is detailed in accounts filed by his Footwork Productions firm, which generates income from his name and image rights.

The paperwork covers the 2014 calendar year and states that David did not complete any new deals during the period.

Turnover was shown to dip but only slightly from the previous year to £14 million, but profits after tax rose by nearly £250,000 to £9.8 million.

A source added to MailOnline: 'Beckham Ventures is the other and more significant [income streams]. He earned over 60 million dollars last year, more than when he was playing.'

MailOnline has reached out to David's representative for comment. 

The sums are more than enough to cover the £5.4 million price tag of the Gloucestershire countryside mansion he and wife Victoria were thought to be interested in buying as the new Beckingham Palace.

The couple were reported to have viewed the 1640 manor house as a possible new family home but their rep told MailOnline: 'There has been no viewing or interest shown in this property by my clients, whatsoever.'

Becks retired from football in May 2013 when he quit Paris Saint-Germain and returned to the UK with Victoria and children Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 13, Cruz, 10, and Harper, four.

He played for Manchester United, Preston North End, England, Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy as well as the French aces.

He won 19 major trophies and is the only English player to win league titles in four countries.

Since retiring, Beckham has relished spending more time with his family and friends while launching a whiskey range with good friend Guy Ritchie and tending to various duties as part of his UNICEF UK ambassador role.

He will temporarily break his retirement to return to his beloved first club where he will lead a team of England aces in a charity match held at Old Trafford in aid of UNICEF on November 14.

Talking to Nick Grimshaw on his BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show earlier in the month, he said: 'I'll be bringing my boots back out, playing in a game on November 14 at Old Trafford, which again, I'm excited about.

'I think people are going to love it.'
