Boy dies after being struck by cars

A 15-year-old boy was killed after being hit by two cars on a motorway, police said.

The teenager was struck by a Vauxhall Astra and Mazda MX5 on the M1 motorway near Wakefield shortly after 12.30am on Saturday, West Yorkshire Police said.

Moments before the accident it is believed the youth was seen on the hard shoulder of the motorway with another teenager.

The northbound section of the motorway was closed at Junction 39, Durkar, West Yorkshire, for six hours, while the accident was investigated.

A police spokeswoman said the teenager, who comes from Wakefield, was struck by the two vehicles which were travelling northbound.

She added: "Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, and secondly, did anybody witness two youths on the northbound hard shoulder of the motorway any time before the accident?

"It is believed that the person who died was with a second male aged 17 from Wakefield.

"This male was not injured but will be spoken to by police later today. He was not arrested."
